The Scottsburg Dixie Youth Baseball Major League all-star team came out on the short end of a 18-13 slugfest with Charlotte County Saturday to even its record at the DYB Major League State Tournament at one game apiece. Scottsburg began the tournament with an 11-1 win over Patrick County on Friday and played Lunenburg last night needing a win to stay alive in the tourney.

Scottsburg held a 5-0 lead after two innings, but defending state champion Charlotte County scored four runs in the third inning and six in the fourth to pull ahead 10-5.
Scottsburg plated five runs in the fifth to pull even, but Charlotte County added five runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to win the game.
Two homers helped Scottsburg take a 5-0 lead after one inning, with Shane Hatcher and Layne Shiflet hitting singles and Arthur Joe Watts connecting on a three-run home run.
Kory Lennon followed with a base hit and Kelonte Gutrich hit a two-run home run to make it 5-0.
Charlotte County scored four runs off two hits, two hit batsmen, a walk and Scottsburg error in the third inning, with Scottsburg turning a 4-3-2 double play to avoid any further damage.
Charlotte County added six runs in the fourth off a two-run homer, two-run triple, RBI single and sacrifice fly to make it 10-5, and scored five runs on five hits in the top of the fifth, including a two-run homer and a pair of doubles.
Five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fifth brought Scottsburg closer, including singles by Joseph Cassada, Chad Wilborne and Shane Hatcher, consecutive two-run doubles by Lennon and Gutrich, and a RBI single by Watts.
Leading 15-10 going into the sixth inning, Charlotte County scored three runs on three hits and three walks, and Scottsburg answered with two runs on three hits in its last at-bat, including singles by Shiflet and Watts, and a two-run double by Lennon.
Scottsburg finished with 14 hits compared to 13 for Charlotte County.
Lennon started the game for Scottsburg on the mound and pitched into the fourth inning before being relieved by Watts.
Watts pitched into the sixth inning before McKinney and Gutrich came to the mound to finish the game for Scottsburg.
Lennon finished with six strikeouts and Watts and Gutrich with one strikeout apiece, and Scottsburg pitching walked eight batters.

Lennon and McKinney each slugged a two-run homer in a six-run third inning, and the Scottsburg DYM Major League all-stars routed Patrick County 11-1 in four innings on Friday in its tournament opener.
Scottsburg took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Shiflet singled, Watts (RBI) doubled, Gutrich reached base after being hit by a pitch and Vaughters hit an RBI triple.
Patrick County scored a run in the second on three base hits and a Scottsburg error, but Scottsburg added six runs on four hits in the third, beginning with a leadoff bunt single by Hatcher.
Watts followed with an RBI triple, Lennon hit a two-run homer, and Gutrich and Vaughters each drew a walk.
Gutrich stole home before McKinney and hit a two-run home run and a 9-1 lead.
Scottsburg scored its last two runs in the top of the fourth inning when Shiflet singled, Watts hit an RBI triple and Lennon hit an RBI single.
Nick Martin and Zack Chappell each added base hits for Scottsburg, both in the second inning.
McKinney and Watts each hurled two innings in the win for Scottsburg, with McKinney striking out two batters and Watts three.
