Clay/Howerton Snag HCC Two-Ball Title

A golfer named Clay took center stage this weekend at the annual Halifax Country Club Two-Ball Invitational Tournament, but it wasn’t Jimmy Clay, considered by many to be the top golfer in the county. Instead it was brother Woody Clay who along with partner John Howerton took home the title in the two-ball tourney, which was played in honor of former HCC president and long-time member Harry Mapp.

Clay and Howerton won by three strokes over Drew Lewis and Brad Mele, and by five strokes over Jimmy Clay and James Lewis, carding an eight-under par round Sunday.

Grayson Throckmorton and J.B. Walker came out on top in the First Flight with a 68-69-137, and Charlie Baskervill and Leon Plaster (69-74-143) emerged from a playoff with Mark Bullock and Harrell Parker and Mike Dunn and Mark Dickerson to take Second Flight honors.

Jay Henderson and Brian Medley won the Third Flight with a 69-77-146.

Woody Clay had estimated it would take at least a seven-under round on Sunday to hold off the field.

“We played well but didn’t make a lot of putts on Saturday, but today we hit it really well and made the birdies and shot eight under. I haven’t been in town much but I’m starting to hit it better and John was solid,” said Clay.

“We knew we had to play well, and we thought we would have to shoot at least seven under to have a chance,” Clay continued.

“We birdied the last few holes, but the wind was tough today, and a lot of the par threes were really tough.

“But, we both played though that and played really solid and that’s the reason we won.”
