A New Partner, Same Result At Green’s Folly

Jimmy Clay had a new golfing partner for the Green’s Folly Member-Member tournament last weekend, but the results were familiar, with Clay and Brandon Harris taking home the title by five strokes.

Clay and Harris carded a two-day total of 63-61-124, five strokes better than Chris Young and Woody Clay, who finished at 64-65-129.

Sammy Puryear and David Day were third in the Championship Flight with a 68-62-130.

Chris Dockrill and Cecil Brear (70-66-136) finished first in the First Flight after winning a playoff with Donald Gravitt and Kyle Gravitt (72-64-136), with Kevin Haskins and Bobby Murray (70-67-137) finishing third.

Tommy Daniel and Preston Crowder took home Third Flight honors with a two-day total of 75-69-144, while Kenneth Hardy and Jeff Hardy (76-70-146) took second over John Coghill and Jim Speer (76-70-146) after a match of cards, with Coghill and Speer finishing third.

Bill Morningstar and Trip Morningstar finished atop the Third Flight with a 80-69-149, followed by Guy Haskins and Donnie Ellington (79-72-151) and Bob Blake and Carroll Solomon (79-73-152).

Harris admitted he was a little nervous playing a member-member for the first time with Clay, generally considered one of the top golfers in Halifax County.

“He’s a very good golfer, and I was kind of nervous the first day but calmer today,” said Harris.

“It was right windy today and conditions were tought, but we both played well and hit the ball good.

Harris’ golf game meshes well with his, noted Clay.

“It’s the first time I’ve played with him in a tournament, but he plays like I do,” said Clay.

“We both hit the ball long.  He never got out of a hole, and if I can play with someone who’s never out of a hole, it kind of turns me loose.”

Harris hit a good shot on hole No. 7 the second day of the tournament to help he and Clay pull away, Clay noted.

“We knew we had to play steady today, because Chris and Woody are a really good team.

“He (Harris) hit a really good shot on seven, to within a few feet of the hole and we made eagle.  That gave us some separation.

“We made a long putt for birdie on 12 and that separated us from the field.   I’m happy with the way I hit it all weekend and I’m happy with the way Brandon hit it.
“We played solid together.”
