Lions Baseball Sweeps Russell

The Halifax County Middle School baseball team swept a doubleheader at home Monday against Russell Middle School to remain unbeaten (9-0) for the season. Halifax rallied from a 3-0 deficit after one inning to defeat Russell 14-4 in game one, before completing the sweep with a 16-2 win in game two.

The Lions, 6-0 in the Southside Middle School Conference, play Bluestone at home today, with game time at 4:30 p.m.

The Lions trailed for one of the few times this season before rallying to win game one, the key hit a three-run homer by Michael Watts in the fourth inning.

Russell struck for three runs on a single, error, two-run double and groundout in the first inning, and added a run on a walk, stolen base and RBI single in the second.

Halifax scored three runs in the second on an error, RBI single by Justin Womack, double by Michael Watts and two-run double by Will Harris, and added six runs in the third to take the lead for good.

Dustin Crews walked, Tyler Stephens hit an RBI triple, and Womack an RBI single, before Josh Irby reached on a fielder’s choice for an RBI.

Eddie Chaney and Ryan Powell (double) followed with RBI hits to make it 9-4.

Five runs in the fourth inning ended the game.  Stephens singled and Womack walked, before Watts hit a three-run homer.  Josh Irby singled, Drew Link and Harris walked before Howerton’s single provided enough runs to end the game.

Harris (two doubles), Howerton (double), Stephens (triple), Womack and Watts (home run, double) each had two hits in game one, while Irby, Chaney and Powell (double) each had one.

Powell hurled three innings to get the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits, while striking out seven and walking two batters.

The Lions scored 16 runs off 12 hits to win game two.  Howerton and Crews each had two hits for Halifax, Howerton with a triple and RBI double, and Crews with two doubles and an RBI.

Harris had a two-run triple, Tripp Bennett an RBI double, Watts a hit and RBI, and Nick Lewis an RBI double.  Thomas Cole had an RBI single, Andrew McCann an RBI double and Colby Grissom a two-run single, while Adrian Moran walked twice and scored three runs.

Halifax scored five runs in the first inning, one in the second and 10 runs in the third inning to help end the game.

Russell scored two runs in the second inning off a walk and two-run home run.

Crews went two innings to get the win, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out three batters and walking one.
