Lions Softball Team Slams Russell Twice

The Halifax County Middle School softball team kept its winning streak intact Monday with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Russell, 16-2 and 24-1. Peyton Myers had a triple and double, Tara Brandon had a double and single, and Ashley Watts had two base hits to lead the Lions in game one.

Kye-Neisha Logan hit a solo home run and single, and scored three runs in game two, while Hannah Saunders hit a three-run double and Taylor Barnes hit a two-run double.

Now 11-0 on the season, the Lady Lions host Bluestone today at 4:30 p.m.

The Lions scored 10 runs in the first inning on the way to a rout of Russell in game one.

The first four batters reached base for the Lions in their first-at bat on an error, walk to Sam Moser, error, double by Myers, walk to Saunders, single by Watts, error, single by Kirsten Doss, double by Brandon, error walk to Moser and another Russell error.

Six runs in the second helped end the game, with Watts hitting a single, Jasmine Lovelace an RBI double, Doss drawing a walk, Brandon hitting a single, Barnes and Puckett reaching on errors and Myers slugging a triple.

Lovelace, Barnes and Brandon shared pitching duties in game one, combining to hold Russell to three hits, while striking out seven and walking four. Russell scored two runs in the second on three walks and a base hit.

Nine runs in the first, 12 in the second and three in the third added up to a big win for the Lions in game two.

Saunders hit a three-run double for Halifax in the first inning of game two, with Barnes, Elliott, Taylor Strange and Lauren Womack adding base hits, Logan drawing a walk, and Saunders, Lauren Albertson and Myers reaching on errors.

Logan homered in the second inning, Barnes hit a two-run double and single, Strange a double, and Lovelace, Cecilie Elliott and Womack singles.

Elliott doubled in the third inning and Doss, Womack and Moser drew walks, as Halifax added its final three runs.

Myers and Womack pitched for Halifax in game two, with Myers allowing one run on one hit in two innings, and Womack allowing a hit and a walk in the third.

Myers struck out one batter in her time on the mound.
