Comets Prevail 7-1 Over Garden City

Halifax County High School picked up its fourth win of the season here Wednesday with a 7-1 victory over Garden City (N.Y.) High School in a game that was a pre-season scrimmage game for the New Yorkers. The Comets had seven hits in the game with Dale Trent leading the way with a pair of hits. Zach Clem, Kelvin Davis Jr., Markee Brooks, William Worley and Luke Griles each had a hit in the contest.

Griles started the game and went most of the way before being relieved by Aron Puryear. Tyler Long went to the mound in the seventh inning to close the game.

Garden City’s lone run of the game was an unearned run that scored when a Garden City batter was struck with a pitch with the bases loaded.

Halifax County got off to a good start with four runs in the bottom of the first inning to stake itself to a 4-0 lead. Clem opened the inning with a single and moved to second base when Davis reached base on a fielder’s choice. A ground-out by long moved the runners into scoring position.

Trent followed with a two-out single that scored both Clem and Davis to put the Comets up 2-0. Brooks was safe when he hit into fielder’s choice. That opened the door for a two-RBI double by Worley that extended the Comets’ lead to 4-0.

The Comets added a run in the bottom of the third inning when Trent laced a single to the outfield with two out and scored on a double by Brooks, making the lead 5-0.

Halifax County pushed its lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning, which started with a double by Davis. Davis moved to third base when Long grounded out and scored when Trent reached base with two out on a Garden City error.

The Comets scored their final run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning when Dylan Sons walked, took advantage of two passed balls to advance to third base and scored on a single by Puryear.

Halifax County High School will be back in action here today, facing Mineola, N.Y. High School in a doubleheader that will start at 2 p.m.
