Ralph Tuck won at number one singles, but the Comets boys’ tennis team absorbed a 6-1 loss at the hands of Patrick Henry at home on Monday. Tuck won his match in a third-set tie-breaker, and number two singles seed Tayler Tepper took his Patriots’ opponent to a tie breaker before losing his match.
Jonathon Strader, Taylor Elliott, Michael Good and Gannon Griffin all lost at numbers three through six singles, and Good/Griffin also fell at number three doubles.
One and two doubles were not completed due to rain, but two singles exhibitions were played, with Comets Allen Scott and Roger Smith both falling to their Patrick Henry opponents.
“We ran into another team today that had an experience edge on us,” said Comets coach David Riddle.
“We started out about even in singles, and it looked as though we could have pulled out three or four of the singles matches early on, but we were not able to stay strong all the way to the end.
“Hopefully, that will be something that comes as we progress.”
Riddle was pleased at the play of Tuck at number one singles and Tepper at the number two singles slot.
“We were extremely pleased to see Ralph continue to win at the number one spot,” he added.
“This was his second straight three set match, and so far he has handled the pressure of that position very well. He had problems with some of those matches last year, but has settled in a lot better in his tie-breaks this season.
“Tepper had a solid match at the number two spot as well and is continuing to improve with more time on the court.
“The guys got to see a level of competition that we will encounter in district play, which should help us in the long run.”
The Comets, 0-1 in the Western Valley District and 1-2 overall, play at Franklin County today.
