Blue Comets Complete Sweep Of Park View

They may have had a little more difficulty than last week, but the Halifax County High School baseball team completed its season sweep of Park View High School Thursday night in South Hill. The Comets held the Dragons to two hits and won 8-1, giving the Comets their third win of the season in four games.

Comets hurlers Aron Puryear and Dale Trent combined to hold Park View to two hits. Puryear allowed two hits and three walks and fanned seven batters in his six innings of work. Trent worked the seventh inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced in the final inning.

On the offensive side of things, the Comets had 11 hits with Kelvin Davis Jr. leading the team with a 3-for-4 night at the plate. Trent had two hits and Tyler Long, Scott Rickman, Dylan Hendricks, William Worley, Markee Brooks and Puryear each had one hit.

The Comets jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a big three-run outburst in the top of the second inning. Rickman led off the inning with a walk, moved to second base on a hit by Worley and used two passed balls to score.

Worley moved to second base on a passed ball, Brooks walked and a hit by Puryear plated both Worley and Brooks to give the Comets a 3-0 lead.

The Comets added three more runs in the top of the third inning. Long walked with one out and moved to third base on a double by Rickman. A double by Trent scored both runners to give the Comets a 5-0 lead. Trent moved to third base when Worley grounded out and scored on a passed ball to give the Comets a 6-0 edge after two and a half innings.

Halifax scored two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, which started with a leadoff double by Brooks. Brooks moved to third base when Puryear grounded out for the first out of the inning and scored on a two-out single by Davis.

Davis stole second base and scored on a single by Long to stake the Comets to an eight-run lead at 8-0.

The Comets held that lead until Park View scratched up its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Cody Spillane opened the inning for Park View with a walk and moved to second base on a passed ball. Spillane scored when Eric Hudson singled and moved to second base on a Comets error to account for the Dragons’ lone run of the game.

With two out, D.J. Brown was struck by a pitch from Puryear, giving the Dragons a pair of base runners. Halifax County got out of the inning when Rob Clary popped up to centerfield for the final out of the inning.

The Comets have a busy week ahead with three games on tap, starting with a road game today at 5 p.m. against Bassett High School. Halifax County will face Garden City, N.Y. here Wednesday at 7 p.m. On Friday, the Comets will face Mineola, N.Y. High School in a 2 p.m. game here at Comets Field.
