Thanks to Mother Nature, this week could be a wild one in Western Valley District basketball. With the regular-season Western Valley District schedule set to conclude this week, the pressure will mount on all of the district teams, virtually all of whom are facing the tough task of having to play three district games in a five-day span.
Halifax County High School’s varsity boys basketball team, looking to protect second place in the district standings and earning a home game in the first round of the district tournament, have three district games scheduled this week, two of which are against teams that are in the thick of the battle for the coveted second-place spot.
Tonight, the Comets are scheduled to travel to Danville to face arch-rival GW at 7:30 p.m. The Comets beat GW here earlier this season in a double-overtime thriller and, with GW lurking a game behind the Comets in third place, the Comets need a win tonight to stay in second place.
On Tuesday night, the Comets will host Franklin County High School at 7:30 p.m. in another pivotal game. The Comets defeated Franklin County in Rocky Mount earlier this season and, with Franklin County also right on the Comets’ heels of the Comets, a win in that game is crucial as well.
The Comets will conclude their district schedule Thursday when they travel to Roanoke to face William Fleming High School. Halifax County defeated William Fleming here earlier this season, but the Colonels are battling to get themselves out of last place and earn a spot on the four-team district tournament field.
Franklin County High School is also facing three key games this week, facing the Comets here Tuesday, going on the road to face district leader Patrick Henry High School on Thursday and then hosting GW at home on Friday.
Patrick Henry High School is in the driver’s seat in the district championship chase. The Patriots could clinch the district title on Thursday with a win at home against Franklin County.
The Comets varsity girls basketball team also has a busy three-game week scheduled as they face GW here tonight, go on the road to play Franklin County on Tuesday and host district leader William Fleming High School on Thursday night.
Halifax County High School’s girls team has one other district game remaining to played – a road game against Patrick Henry High School that was postponed to due the weather. That game could possibly be rescheduled for this week as well, giving the Comets girls a busy four-game week.
The Comets varsity boys team had a non-district home game against E.C. Glass scheduled for Thursday. That game has been bumped over to Friday night, giving the Comets boys team four games to play this week.
