South Boston National and Scottsburg won opening round games Monday night in the inaugural Big Four Tournament being held at Conner Fields at the Halifax County South Baseball Complex in Cluster Springs.
The tournament, which showcases Halifax County’s 8-10-year-old Minor League all-star players, features four teams, South Boston National, South Boston American, Scottsburg and host team Halifax County South.
Opening night games saw South Boston National shut out Halifax County South 10-0 in four innings, but game two unfolded in a totally different manner, with Scottsburg holding off South Boston American 18-16.
Each team will play a minimum of three games in the tournament, with the championship game scheduled for Thursday.

A back-and-forth, high scoring game saw Scottsburg edge South Boston American, with each team scoring at least one run in each of six innings.
Each team scored three runs in its first at-bat, with Scottsburg taking a 7-5 lead after two innings and a 13-8 lead after three innings.
South Boston American got back into contention by outscoring Scottsburg 7-2 in the next two innings to tie the game going into the sixth and final inning.
Scottsburg won the game by outscoring South Boston American 3-1 in the final inning.
Tyler Collins and Kamron Turbeville led Scottsburg with three hits apiece, Caleb Dyer finished with a triple and base hit, and Gavin Colwell and Trevor Hazelwood each had a double and single.
Dylan Gano finished with two base hits, and Cody Casen had a single for Scottsburg.
Scottsburg pitching struck out 10 South Boston American batters during the game.
Osiris Ross, Dakii Chandler and Duval Ballou each had two hits for South Boston American.
Dillon Fisher, Jarome Davis, Shyheim Davis, Ryan Duffer and Kolby Fisher added base hits for South Boston American.
South Boston American pitching struck out six Scottsburg batters.

South Boston National scored five runs in its first at-bat and never looked back in beating Halifax County South 10-0 in four innings.
National added three runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth inning to complete the scoring.
Damion Conner and Colin Saunders hit triples for South Boston National, and Cameron Newton hit a double, while Semaj Jeffreys added a base hit.
South Boston National pitching struck out nine Halifax County South batters.
Kameron Brigham and Trey Comer had base hits for Halifax County South.
Halifax County South pitching struck out seven South Boston National batters.
