Big Four Tourney opens Monday night

A new baseball tournament to showcase Halifax County’s 8-10-year-old Minor League all-star players opens tonight at Conner Field at the Halifax County South baseball complex in Cluster Springs.

The Scottsburg, South Boston American and South Boston National Dixie Youth AAA League (Minor League) all-star teams and the Minor League all-star team from the Halifax County South Cal Ripken Baseball League will be featured in the tournament.

There will be no admission charge for fans, and concessions will be available throughout the tournament, officials said.

Tonight’s action will begin at 6:30 p.m. with South Boston National facing host Halifax County South. Scottsburg will square off against South Boston American in the 8 p.m. nightcap.

The tournament is scheduled to continue through midweek, concluding with a championship game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. If an additional game is needed to determine the champion, it will be played at 8 p.m. Thursday.

The format of this tournament is a little different from the standard double-elimination tournament format. The tournament is a four-team double-elimination tournament, however, each team is guaranteed to play three games.

The timing of the tournament appears to be a good fit for the teams as the county Dixie Youth teams have completed district play and are practicing and preparing for the start of the state tournament, which comes toward the end of the month. The Halifax County South Cal Ripken all-star team is also preparing for tournament play.

Halifax County South league official Dick Clark is the tournament chairman.
