Big Four to showcase teams

The Halifax County South Big Four Tournament, a new baseball tournament to showcase Halifax County’s 8-10-year-old Minor League all-star players, will be held next week at Conner Field at the Halifax County South baseball complex in Cluster Springs.

The tournament will feature the Scottsburg, South Boston American and South Boston National Dixie Youth AAA League (Minor League) all-star teams and the Minor League all-star team from the Halifax County South Cal Ripken Baseball League.

There will be no admission charge for fans and concessions will be available throughout the tournament, according to tournament spokesman Dale Harris.

“We hope we’re starting something that we can do annually,” Harris pointed out.

“With the way the programs are structured, the county teams don’t play each other anymore like they used to do. There is a lot of interest in baseball in the county. We need to start playing each other again.”

The timing of the tournament appears to be a good fit for the teams, Harris said, noting that the county Dixie Youth teams have completed district play and are practicing and preparing for the start of the state tournament, which comes toward the end of the month. The Halifax County South Cal Ripken all-star team is also preparing for tournament play.

“It’s going to be good baseball,” Harris pointed out.

The format of the tournament will be a little different from the standard double-elimination tournament format. The tournament will be a four-team double-elimination tournament with each team being guaranteed to play three games.

Action will begin Monday with South Boston National facing host Halifax County South at 6:30 p.m. and Scottsburg squaring off against South Boston American in the 8 p.m. nightcap. The tournament is scheduled to conclude with a championship game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. If an additional game is needed to determine the champion, it will be played at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Halifax County South league official Dick Clark is the tournament chairman.
