Our hearts were saddened to learn of the death of South African President Nelson Mandela, a true gentle giant who died last Thursday at the age of 95 following a long illness.

Whew! Turkeys get pardons

The United States President is pardoning the National Thanksgiving Turkey in a ceremony in the Rose Garden today.  The president will celebrate the 66th anniversary of the National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation, reflect upon the time-honored traditions of Thanksgiving, and wish American families a safe and healthy holiday.

It will be 50 years on Friday that an assassin’s bullets struck down President John F. Kennedy in the prime of life. 

Seeking memories to share

As we approach the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination on Nov. 22, you will be hearing and seeing many retrospective stories and reflections about that fateful day in Dallas a half-century ago.

Veterans Day

Our 5th District VFW Chaplain friend Cary Ford invites all veterans, their family and friends, and other area residents who love their country and want to show appreciation to veterans who have served their country to attend the annual Veterans Day Parade Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. in downtown South Boston. 

Fall at its best

Many county residents will be making the trek to the Blue Ridge Parkway to bask in the glory of fall’s fabulous foliage. Some went this past weekend and reported the trip was well worth the drive.
