COMMUNITY VOICE: Distorting history to promote gay acceptance

President Obama’s timely support for same sex marriage has generated a wave of discussion amongst the American people. Whether it is the workplace water-cooler, letters in local newspapers or reports on local and national news, the recent “flip-flop,” I mean “evolving” position of the president on the matter of same sex marriage, has reemerged the issue into a public discussion.

There are many of us who have found ancient artifacts from early Native Americans while walking our fields and farm roads after a fresh rain has exposed them to view as they migrate to the surface from so many years ago.

In minor ways we differ, in major we’re the same.” Dr. Maya Angelou so eloquently penned these words in her poem “Human Family.” And though she was referring to the thread of humanity that weaves through us all, I suggest that the same lesson applies for communities and businesses striving to keep pace in this rapidly changing global economy.

The Uranium Working Group’s work plan presented at a March 7 meeting of the Uranium Mining Subcommittee drew instant, sharp criticism for its lack of transparency, which was deemed particularly reprehensible in light of the report by the National Academy of Sciences, which told us that international best practices are “founded on principles of openness, transparency and public involvement in oversight and decision-making.”
