James “Weldon” Solomon passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.

Robert Irvin Rickman

Robert Irvin Rickman died peacefully Sept. 8, 2013 (his mother’s birthday) in Mechanicsville. He was born in Clover on May 30, 1923 to the late Lottie Lacks Rickman and James Thomas Rickman, and he was also preceded in death by a son, Mickey L. Rickman; sisters Annie Jeffress Rickman and Agnes Dollaye; brothers James Thomas Rickman Jr. and Isaac R. Rickman. 

Harry Lee Carden

Harry Lee Carden, age 87, of 11965 U.S. Hwy. 29, Chatham died Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at his residence. He was born March 10, 1926 in Halifax County, the son of the late Charlie F. Carden and the late Mamie Nichols Carden.

Bertha Davis Martin

Mrs. Bertha Davis Martin of 1108 Wilborn Ave., South Boston, died on Friday, Sept. 27, at the age of 82. 

Lilly Bishop McDowell

Mrs. Lilly Bishop McDowell of South Boston died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, in South Boston.  She was born Feb. 17, 1958 in Halifax County.  She was the daughter of the late James Charles Bishop Sr. and Gertrude Poole Bishop and is survived by her husband, Hugh Watson McDowell Jr., and two daughters, Morgan Elizabeth McDowell of South Boston and Courtney Anne McDowell of Newport News.

Mrs. Rosalind Hester Lacks of Love Shop Road, Halifax died Wednesday, Sept. 25, at her residence at the age of 55.

Almarie Green McPhail

Ms. Almarie Green McPhail of South Boston died Thursday, Sept. 26, at Berry Hill Nursing Home at the age of 87.

Shirley Bell Coleman

Ms. Shirley Bell Coleman of Alexandria, formerly of South Boston, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Alexandria Hospital at the age of 60.

Irene Chambers Chappell

Mrs. Irene Chambers Chappell of Meadville Trail, Halifax died Sunday, Sept. 22, at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 92.

George Franklin Thompson

George Franklin Thompson of South Boston died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2013, at Berry Hill Nursing Home. He was born in Halifax County on April 8, 1934 and was 79 years of age. He was the son of the late Major Bee Thompson and Maude Elizabeth Leigh Thompson.
