Gallie Thomas (G.T.) Shelton Jr. died peacefully on March 16, 2014 at his home in Danville.
Born on June 25, 1921 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Gallie Thomas and Ira Mae Shelton. He spent his entire life in south central Virginia except for the time he served in the military. He was married to the former Cecile Mae Henderson for 68 years; she survives him.
A United States Army veteran, he served in World War II in the Pacific Theatre in India and Burma (now Myanmar.) He was a farmer and rural United States Postal carrier in Halifax County and also worked as a tobacco grader for the United States Department of Agriculture.
He was a charter member of the Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department and a member of VFW Post 647. After retirement, he and his wife relocated to Danville, where they have lived for 23 years. Mr. Shelton was a long-term member of Oak Level Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Gloria Gibson of Charlotte, N.C., and Linda Dunn of Danville.
He was predeceased by his son, Roy Thomas Shelton.
He is also survived by his son-in-law, William E. (Scooter) Dunn, and his grandchildren, Brooke Harrelson of Charlotte and Hunter Dunn of Danville.
Additional survivors include his brothers, Ira (wife Gloria) and Ryland Shelton, both of Chatham; his sister-in-law, Clovis Shelton, of Danville; his brother-in-law, Earl Morris, of Danville; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Thelma Atkinson, and his brothers, Frank, Sidnor, Clifton and Harry Lee Shelton.
Special recognition and appreciation are given to the caregivers who have provided compassionate and loving care to Mr. and Mrs. Shelton for the past seven years. They are Shirley McCain, Chenise Blackwell, Rhonda Brown, Jessica Coleman, Stacy Davis, Cheryl Hunt, Gwen Lea, Sandra Thacker, Georgetta Walton, Schinita Warner and Suzanne Woicikowfski. Appreciation also is given to Drs. Milam, Kotlaba, Miller and Lingell and to Legacy Hospice for the care they have provided.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Shelton will be held at Oak Level Presbyterian Church located at 1243 Oak Level Road, Halifax, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, with the Rev. Dr. Ed Melvin presiding. The family will greet visitors at 1 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
