Gladys Wilson Buchanan

Gladys Wilson Buchanan, 83, of Lynchburg passed away early Monday, March 10, 2014, at the Brian Healthcare Facility in Fincastle, where she had been a patient for four years.  

She was the wife of the late Thomas Henry Buchanan, her husband of 52 years, and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church where she was an active member for many years up until her convalescence.

Born Nov. 5, 1930, Mrs. Buchanan also was preceded in death by her parents, John Berkley Wilson and Rosa Geneva (Wilkerson) Wilson; her brother, John Preston Wilson; one son, Donald Berkley Buchanan; and one grandson, Watkins Thomas Buchanan.

She is survived by sons Ronald Thomas Buchanan of Gainesville and Glenn Dale Buchanan and wife Gail of Cary, N.C.; two daughters, Teresa Buchanan Faulconer and husband Leonard, of Cary, N.C., and her special daughter, Cheryl Ann Buchanan, also of Cary; a grandson, Ryan Seal Buchanan, and his wife, Amelia; a granddaughter, Cayce Caitlin Buchanan; one great-grandson, Ian Donald Thomas Buchanan; and one great-granddaughter, Irene Elizabeth Buchanan.  She also leaves many beloved extended family members and friends.

A devoted Christian woman, Mrs. Buchanan possessed a devout faith and was an inspiration to her family and many dear friends, all of whom will miss her greatly.  She, with her husband and other friends, were founding members of Lynchburg Area Association for Retarded Children, later to develop into The Arc of Central Virginia.  She was also a gifted painter and a lover of all things spiritual and beautiful.

The family will welcome visitors Thursday, March 13, at 10 a.m. at Beulah Baptist Church, 528 Leesville Road, Lynchburg.  

A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Beulah Baptist Church with Dr. Dennis Hollandsworth officiating.  A graveside service will precede interment at Halifax Memorial Gardens, South Boston at 2:30 p.m. 

Arrangements are being handled by Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg.   

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Mrs. Buchanan’s memory to The Arc of Central Virginia, 1508 Bedford Ave., Lynchburg, VA 24504 or Beulah Baptist Church, Lynchburg, VA.
