Mrs. Nellie Pratt Mangrum Barley of Webster Street, South Boston died Monday, Feb. 10, at her residence at the age of 79.
Mrs. Barley was born in Brunswick County on March 31, 1934 and was the daughter of the late Mr. Eddie Mangrum and Mrs. Faithy Macklin Mangrum. She was married to the late Mr. Pearlie Edward Barley and was a member of Ebenezer Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Mrs. Barley was a retired educator from Halifax County Public Schools.
Her survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Octavia Annette Clark, and husband Tyree of South Boston; two sons, Mr. Henry Gatha Richardson Jr. and Shavonda and Mr. Thomas Edward Barley, all of South Boston; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ms. Mattie Mangrum of New Jersey, Ms. Sarah Burton of Pa., Ms. Frances Dugger of New York and Mrs. Janie Holmes and husband Mack of Brodnax; four sisters-in-law, the devoted Ms. Clarissa Barley, Ms. Carol B. Turner, Ms. Barbara Barley and Ms. Marjorie Barley; one brother-in-law, Mr. James Barley; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, one sister, Mrs. Agnes Taylor, and four brothers, Mr. David Mangrum, Mr. Charles Mangrum, Mr. Eddie Mangrum and Mr. James Richard Goldson, also preceded Mrs. Barley in death.
Funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m. at Ebenezer Christian Methodist Church with the Rev. Andre’ Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in the Barley Family Cemetery in Java.
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 702 Webster Street, South Boston.
