Nellie Phillips Gilliam, 85, of Lynchburg passed away Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born in Bedford County on Oct. 22, 1928, she was a daughter of the late L. V. Phillips and Nellie Baker Phillips. She was a long-time member of College Hill Baptist Church. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, W. C. Gilliam; one son, Gary Michael Gilliam, and his wife Julie of Halifax; three sisters, Louise P. Leech of Forest, Betty P. Chaney and Nancy P. Auth, both of Concord; three grandchildren, Gary Michael Gilliam Jr. and his wife, Christy, and their children, Grayson and Garrett, Matt Gilliam and his wife, Sabrina, and their son, Grant, and Amanda Bates and her husband, Chuck, and their daughter, Maylee.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with the Rev. Andrew Grose officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road in Lynchburg.
