Mr. John Raleigh Wilkerson of Scottsburg died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at The Woodview nursing home.
He was born Jan. 22, 1920 in Halifax County and was 94 years old. He was the son of the late William Hannibal Wilkerson and the late Ellie Price Wilkerson and was married to the late Christine Wilmouth Wilkerson, who survives.
He was a member of Clover United Methodist Church and was a WWII Army veteran. He also was a member of American Legion Post 8. Mr. Wilkerson was a self-employed farmer and carpenter.
Mr. John Raleigh Wilkerson is survived by his wife of 67 years, Christine Wilmouth Wilkerson, of Scottsburg; one son, Mark R. Wilkerson, and wife Mickey of South Boston; one daughter, Debra W. Cassell, and husband Stan of Hampton; five grandchildren, Heather Blanks and husband Travis of Alton, Justin Wilkerson of South Boston, Amanda Nichols of Hampton, Brian Seigla and wife Sara of Richmond and Andrew Cassell and wife Kasie of Castle Rock, Colo.; five great grandchildren, Hailey and Taylor Banks, Wyatt Seigla and Chase and Olivia Cassell; one special sister-in-law, Mary Wilkerson, a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Allie Fallen, Rosa Wilson, Vinnie Smith and Evvie Saunders; and four brothers, Troy, Fred, Herbert and Ira Wilkerson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mary Tharpe officiating. Burial will follow in the Halifax Memorial Gardens with military rites.
The family will receive friends Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and other times at his home, 9192 J. D. Hagood Hwy., Scottsburg.
