Lillian Shotwell Nickels Johnson, 97, of Rockville, a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother departed this life on Dec. 15, 2013 and went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She is survived by four children, Christine N. Powick, Henry J. Nickels, Elwood M. (Snooky) Johnson Jr. and Wanda J. Bouquet, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Lillian was born on Feb. 23, 1916 and grew up in Nathalie in Halifax County. She was the last surviving child of the seven children born of Joel Hubbard Shotwell and Mamie Clara Davis Shotwell.
“Shot” as she was called in high school played on the girls basketball team, graduating from Volens High School in June 1933, she continued her education at the Phillips Secretarial School in Lynchburg. After marrying her first husband, Frank Nickels, she moved to Rockville. He passed away from an accident after returning from service in Europe during World War II. Some years later, she married Elwood M. Johnson.
She was employed at Bank of Virginia prior to the birth of her children. Retired as a junior executive with Thalhimers after a successful career of 27 years. She retired a second time from Hecht’s eight years later.
She was active in community civic activities as a founding member of the Rockville Junior Woman’s Club, charter member of the Rockville Community Center, and she served as a Hanover County voting poll volunteer. She was an active member of Berea Baptist Church for over 75 years.
The family would like to thank all of the friends and church family for the love they have received. Also a deep felt thanks to Miss Lillian’s long-time caregivers, Paula Austin and Jackie Loving, for the caring and love they bestowed on her while helping in her care for the last six years.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Dec. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St., Rockville.
A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Berea Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
