James Rawley “Pete” Austin died Nov. 20, 2013 in Nashville, Tenn.
He was born on Dec. 9, 1920 in Halifax County, the son of the late Jimmie H. and Nannie M. Austin. He was married to the late V. V. Dawson, originally from Charlotte County. Pete is survived by his second wife, Linda Faye Bramblett, of Shelbyville, Tenn.
Also, Pete is survived by Jacquelyn Austin Slaughter, Susan Austin Brooks and Joseph Ashley Austin.
He was preceded in death by his fourth child, James Rawley Austin Jr.
Two of Pete’s six siblings survive, Barbara Ann Austin Jones and Sandra Austin Edwards. Other siblings, deceased, are Ruby Austin Holdren, Ralph Austin, Hubert “Dude” Austin and Aubrey “Sonny” Austin.
Most recently, Pete resided in Shelbyville, Tenn. where he moved in 1971 as an employee of Peoples National Bank. Prior to that, he lived in Orange. He began his long banking career in Roxboro, N.C. Throughout his professional life, Pete served in many capacities in the Virginia Bankers and American Bankers Associations.
Pete attended Lynchburg College, and after serving as a flight instructor in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II, he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from VPI. He remained active in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and retired as lt. colonel.
