Mr. Cecil Demara Stokes of MacDonald Road, Scottsburg died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Lynchburg General Hospital at the age of 55.
Mr. Stokes was born in Baltimore, Md. on June 20, 1958 to Mr. William Melvin Stokes and the late Mrs. Delois Butler Stokes. He was married to the late Mrs. Gloria Jeffress Stokes and was a member of Spanish Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Stokes was formerly employed with the Department of Corrections in Nottoway and Halifax counties.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. April Thompson and husband Darome Sr., of Crewe; four sons, Mr. Antwane Stokes and wife Paula, of Waldorf, Md., Mr. Ephraim Stokes of Blackstone, Mr. Joel “Jay” Jeffress and wife Nicole, of Richmond and Mr. Jason LeMar Jeffress of the home; 11 grandchildren; his father of Blackstone; three brothers, Mr. Anthony Stokes and wife Stacey, of Blackstone, Mr. Tyrone Butler of Denver, Col. and Mr. Demarcus Stokes of Crewe; three sisters, Ms. Tanya Carrol and Ms. Shantael Stokes, both of Baltimore, Md., and Ms. Yvonne Barter of Henrico; father and mother-in-law, the Rev. Freddie Jeffress Sr. and Mrs. Edith Jeffress; two sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; and a host of aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including the devoted family friend, Ms. Donna Carr.
In addition to his mother and wife, two brothers, Mr. Wayne M. Stokes and Mr. Ulysses Butler, also preceded Mr. Stokes in death.
Funeral services for Mr. Stokes will be Saturday, Nov. 24, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Spanish Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie M. Womack officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites.
Public visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, Nov. 23, 2013, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home, and from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, 476 Mt. Nebo Road, Blackstone, VA 23824, with the family receiving friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m.
