Betty Burton

Betty Burton of Richmond died Sept. 10, 2013. She was born in South Boston in 1930, and was the widow of J.E. Burton Sr. 

Mrs. Burton was the daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth Fulp Crews and Walter Crews. She was cherished by her daughter, Mary Ruth Burton and husband Rich McClain; and sons, Donald G. Burton and wife Sonya, and John E. Burton Jr. and wife Kay. 

Betty was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Teresa Ellen Burton; and four sisters. 

Her stepdaughters surviving her are Lynn Burton and partner Sylvia Lindsey, Barbara Oaks and Jean Centner and husband John; her grandchildren, Ruth Fuller and Burton Fuller, Ward Burton and wife Tabitha, Brian Burton and wife Judith, Jeff Burton and wife Kim, and Josh Burton; her beloved nieces and nephews along with her great-grandchildren including, Jeb Burton, Sarah Burton Graper, Ashton Burton, Paige Burton, Harrison Burton and Alexander Burton; in-laws, John Bloxham and Meredith Bowman; beloved friend and caregiver, Letha Rice; and lifelong friend Onell Haseltine. 

Betty was secretary and treasurer of J.E. Burton Construction Co., Inc. in South Boston for 45 years. After moving to Richmond, she was an active member and volunteer at Reveille Church. She also volunteered at St. Paul’s Lenten services and at the Hermitage. She was known for her hearty laugh, sense of fun and good humor, her empathy and acceptance of all types of people, and her fine southern cooking. 

Join us for a celebration of her life at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Main Street United Methodist Church, 701 N. Main St., South Boston. Interment will be private. 

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Windsor for their loving care. 

In lieu of flowers make donations in her memory to AseraCare Hospice Foundation, 8001 Franklin Farms Dr., #206, Richmond, VA 23229, so that others less fortunate may benefit from their care.
