Mrs. Erma Mills Slayton, 87 of 1215 Henry Mill Road, Vernon Hill, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mrs. Slayton was born on Oct. 22, 1925 in Keeling, a daughter of the late Daniel Mills and the late Mamie Frances Shields Mills. She had lived most of her life in the Vernon Hill community of Halifax County. She retired after 30 years of service from the Halifax County Public School system where she was a teacher’s aide. She was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church where she was a member of the Women’s Missionary Group. She was married to Claude Edward Slayton, who predeceased her on July 3, 1986.
Mrs. Slayton is survived by two sons, Danny Slayton of Vernon Hill, Barry Slayton of Keeling; two granddaughters, Heather Blanks and husband, Travis of Alton, Carrie Slayton of Conroe, Tex.; two great grandchildren, Hailey Blanks and Taylor Blanks; and one sister, Shirley Cristall of Danville. She was predeceased by two brothers, Aubrey Mills, William Mills; four sisters, Elmer Mills, Marie Carson, Dorothy Dance and Illah Hardy.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013 from Mount Tabor Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment followed in Highland Burial Park.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department, 2019 Oak Level Road, Halifax, Va. 24558.
The family will receive friends and guests at the residence of Mrs. Eunice Slayton, 1144 Henry Mill Road, Vernon Hill.
