Bessie Mae Womack Pounds

Mrs. Bessie Mae Womack Pounds of 1205 Old Grubby Road, South Boston died June 21, 2013 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 75.

Mrs. Pounds was born in Halifax County on Feb. 10, 1938 and was the daughter of the late Mr. William D. Womack and Mrs. Evelyn Barksdale Womack. She was married to the late Mr. Edwin J. Pounds Sr. and was a member of Foundation Ministries of Faith Apostolic Church. Mrs. Pounds was employed for many years at Halifax Community Hospital (Halifax Regional Hospital) and later worked as a private care provider for many families throughout the community.

Survivors of Mrs. Pounds include three sons, Elder Jasper W. Pounds and wife Margaret and Mr. Kelvin M. Pounds, all of South Boston, and Mr. Edwin J. Pounds Jr. and wife Mia of Mechanicsville; two daughters, Ms. Terri P. Jennings and Mrs. Tiffany P. Glass and husband Antonio, all of South Boston; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Mr. Walter T. Womack and wife Bonnie of Baltimore, Md.; five sisters, Mrs. Rachel W. Coleman and husband Charles of South Boston, Mrs. Ressie W. Royster and husband Marvin of Richmond, Mrs. Minnie W. Logan of South Boston, Mrs. Lillie M. Ragsdale of Halifax and Mrs. Flossy Stokes of Farmville; five sisters-in-law, Ms. Thelma P. Womack of Baltimore, Ms. Queen P. Womack and Mrs. Bessie W. Edmonds, both of Halifax, Mrs. Emily P. Griffith of South Boston and Mrs. Helen P. Brown and husband Billy of Washington, D.C.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, five brothers, Whitt, Herman, William Jr., Henry and Jimmie Womack, one sister, Nannie W. Barksdale, and one grandson, Carson J. Glass, also preceded Mrs. Pounds in death.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 27, at noon at Household of Faith Apostolic Church, South Boston, with Elder William Howerton officiating. Burial will follow in the Pounds Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Public viewing for family and friends will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
