Mrs. Mary Alice Newton Poteat of East Oak Hill Drive, Halifax died Saturday, May 4, 2013, at The Woodview.
She was born in Mecklenburg County on Sept. 16, 1935 and was 77 years old. She was the daughter of the late Shirley Clayton Newton and Willie Vera Owen Newton and was married to the late William Daniel Poteat. She was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Patricia P. Smith, and husband Larry of Scottsburg; one son, Gerald Wayne Poteat, and wife Linda of Buffalo Springs; three grandchildren, Christopher Poteat and wife Stacey of South Boston, Eric Poteat and wife Melissa of Vernon Hill and Holly Blackstock and husband Riley of Clover; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Fuller Newton, of Nelson.
She also was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Clayton Newton.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 6, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Dan River Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Doug Gibson officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
