Mr. John William Hardie of Halifax died Friday, March 29, 2013, at his home. He was born in Halifax County on Jan. 7, 1936 and was 77 years of age. He was the son of the late William Bryan Hardie and Marie Harris Hardie. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Merlene Wade Hardie.
Mr. Hardie was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and was a retired tobacco buyer with Universal Leaf Tobacco Company.
Survivors include two daughters,
Dale H. Sparks of Halifax and Donna H. Henderson and husband L. W. of Oak Level; son-in-law Dan C. Monette of Chesterfield; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Scott Adams, Joey, Stephanie and Jace Adams, Kevin, Crystal, Maci, Bailee and Addilynn Henderson, Brian Lee and Cathy Henderson, all of Halifax, Sara Beth and Alex Glass of Halifax, John Collins and Leigh Monette of Chesterfield; his sisters, Florine Hall and Ella Frances Ryan, both of Danville; and a good friend, Abigail.
One daughter, Denise Monette, also preceded Mr. Hardie in death.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 1, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Revs. Patricia Neilsen and Bryant Wilbourne officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family received friends Sunday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and other times at his home, 1052 Leighwood Trail, Halifax.
