Earnest L. “Sonny’ Bennett, age 86, died March 27, 2013 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Bennett grew up in Richmond, one of two sons of the late Joseph Bennett and Inez Walk Bennett.
Survivors include one niece, Laura Tate, of Richmond; and a long time friend, Steven Emory. One brother, Horace, also preceded Mr. Bennett in death.
He served almost 30 years in the Navy and is a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War where he earned several medals, including the World War II Victory Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. After his retirement, he was best known around town as the cook at the pool hall and a regular at The Hillcrest. He was also a local artist whose work was displayed at the museum in South Boston in 1996. He took pride in his ability to sketch Native Americans in which he incorporated his mother’s name in every piece.
His discipline and patriotism he learned in the Navy never left him, as friends and family will attest.
