Ms. Edith Mae Torian Barksdale of Red Bank Road, Virgilina died Monday, March 11, at her residence at the age of 73.
Ms. Barksdale was born in Halifax County on Jan. 8, 1940, and was the daughter of Mrs. Mary Morris Torian and the late Mr. John Lonnie Torian. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in East Orange, N.J. and was a retired licensed practical nurse. Ms. Barksdale resided in New Jersey for many years and after her retirement, returned to Halifax County.
Ms. Barksdale is survived by three daughters, Ms. Vera Barksdale and Ms. Mary Coles, both of Newark, N.J. and Ms. Bonita Barksdale of Virgilina; one son, Mr. Muhummad Kamal of St. Louis, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her mother of South Boston; three sisters, Ms. Hallie Torain of East Orange, N.J., Ms. Sheila Torain and Ms. Najah Wakeelah, both of South Boston; two brothers, Mr. John Torain of South Boston and Mr. Thomas Torain of Irvington, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Ms. Barksdale will be Monday, March 18, at 11 a.m. with services at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. Sandy Palmer officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 2223 Red Bank Road, Virgilina. Public viewing for family and friends will be Sunday from noon until 6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
