Robert Douglas ‘Doug’ Gravitt Sr.

Mr. Robert Douglas ‘Doug’ Gravitt Sr. of 6 Maplewood Drive, South Boston, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at the age of 85. He was born in Halifax County on July 25, 1927 to the late Jessie L. Gravitt Sr. and the late Mary Ramsey Gravitt and was married to Irene Jones Gravitt. Mr. Gravitt was a member of Main St. United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Bob Gravitt and wife Wanda of Angier, N.C., Dianne Holmes and husband Randy, Donald Gravitt and wife Janet, and Jimmy Gravitt and wife Tammy, all of South Boston; two sisters-in-law, Paris E. Gravitt of South Boston and Doris C. Gravitt of Halifax; five grandchildren, Blake Gravitt and wife, Melissa of Fuquay - Varina, N.C., Liza Holmes of Nelson, Kyle Gravitt and wife Jackie of Centreville, Amanda Holmes of Hanover, Md., and Kelly Gravitt of South Boston; step-grandchildren, Cliff Lewis and wife Theresa of Richmond, Nick Martin of South Boston, Denise Stewart and husband Olin, Dawn Herring and husband David, and Derrick Avery and wife Wendy, all of Raleigh, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Leah Holmes of Nelson; six step-great-grandchildren, Sam and Cole Stewart, Brooke and Emily Herring, and Gabriel and Addison Avery. In addition to his parents, three brothers, Jessie Gravitt Jr., Clarence Gravitt, and Trent Gravitt; and one sister, Lelia Gravitt, also preceded Mr. Gravitt in death.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Holmes and Ed Rigg officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends at Mt. Cana United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home.
