Victor Henry Powell

Mr. Vitctor Henry Powell of 2030 Mountain Road, Halifax died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at Halifax Regional Hospital. 

He was born in Halifax County on Feb. 26, 1927 and was 85 years old. He was the son of the late Herbert Augustus Powell and Annie Alderson Powell and was married to Mary Blanks Powell who survives. 

He was a retired employee of the Halifax County School System, a member of Beth Car Baptist Church, a U.S. Navy Veteran, served on the USS LST-357, was a member of American Legion Post 8 and a VFW Post 8243.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Blanks Powell, of South Boston; one daughter, Vickie P. Shelton, and husband Winfred of Scottsburg; one son, Thomas Gardner Powell, and wife Vicki of Midlothian; one sister, Janet M. Domke, and husband Eugene of Corbett, Oregon; two brothers, Lacy W. Powell and wife Audrey of Altavista and Earl Gunn Powell and wife Shirley of South Boston; three grandchildren, Stefanie Powell, Jamie Shelton and wife Donna, Jenifer Jones and husband Simon Jones Jr.; one great-grandchild, Paige Shelton; two step-grandchildren, Jamie and Chad Beran; two step great-grandchildren, Jamie Beran Jr. and Kayle Beran. 

He was preceded in death by one brother, Herbert Lester Powell Sr.; two sisters, Mae Conway and Betty Vernon.

A funeral will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Rathel officiating. Burial will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens with military rites. 

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of Vickie Shelton, 3120 McDonald Road, Scottsburg.
