Winona Franklin Walker

Winona Franklin Walker, 104, of Greensboro, N.C. died Nov. 10, 2012 at Friends Home Guilford.


A graveside service will be held Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston with the Rev. David Anderson of First Baptist Church officiating. 

Winona was born Aug. 9, 1908 as eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Walker in South Boston. She went through the public school in South Boston and was a graduate of Harrisonburg State Teachers College, later called James Madison University. She taught school for a couple of years before attending the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and received a degree in library science. She joined the Special Armed Forces Unit in 1945 and in September 1946 she was sent to an Army Unit Headquarters near Berlin, Germany as a librarian for that outfit. 

Upon returning to the states in 1947 she settled in Greensboro, N.C. and was chief librarian in the public school system. She retired in 1975 and spent her last years in Friends Home Guilford in Greensboro. 

She was a member of College Park Baptist Church. 

Winona will always be remembered as the lovely soft-spoken, friendly lady she was. 

She is survived by her brother, Dan Walker, of Reidsville, N.C.; her sister, Hope Carpenter, of Glade Valley, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
