Ryland Pett Harris

Ryland Pett Harris, 79, of South Boston, widow of Lottie Elliott Harris, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law in Raleigh, NC.  

Ryland was born in Granville County, N.C. on Nov. 29, 1932, and was the son of the late Shirley Allen and Rosa Bell Elliott Harris.  He graduated from Oak Hill High School with the Class of 1950 and furthered his education with classes at Clemson and North Carolina State University. 

Ryland was a member of Union Christian Church in Virgilina where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir.  He was retired from Burlington Industries where he worked for 45 years, lastly as superintendent of Burling and Mending.  

Ryland was PTA president of Oak Hill, a member of Virgilina Lodge # 248, AF & AM; Eastern Star, South Boston – Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History; Rotary Club; South Boston Planning Commission, and the Wolf Pack Club.  

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home with the Revs. Heather Totty and Michael Harris officiating.  Interment with Masonic Rites will be in Virgilina Cemetery immediately following the service.  

Mr. Harris is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Wanda Harris of Raleigh, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Roy Laney of Oxford, N.C.; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Rita and Vance Bowen of Virgilina; and sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and Edward Compton of Oxford, N.C. Ryland’s four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren, also survive.  

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
