James Eugene Watkins of Henderson, N.C., the son of the late Thomas Watkins and Louise Clark Watkins, formerly of Elizabeth, N.J., and a native of South Boston, died Friday, Sept. 14. He was educated in the public schools of South Boston, having driven school buses at Bethune High School where he also played football. He was baptized at Ebenezer CME Church until moving to Newark, N.J., at the age of 17.
On Nov. 5, 1966 he married Sandra John of Henderson, and they were blessed with one child, Eugene DeShonn Watkins.
He was also the father of Andrae, Monique and Gigi from an earlier relationship.
He was employed at General Motors in New Jersey for over 31 years before retiring and returning to Henderson.
Mr. Watkins was also preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia ‘Baby-Sister’ Watkins Faulkner and Mary ‘Mickey’ Watkins Strange; and three brothers, William ‘Bill,’ Richard and Thomas ‘Alex.’
He is survived by his wife, Sandra; son DeShonn; grandson Darius Eugene; his other children, Andrea, Monique and Gigi; and an uncle, Thomas Watkins, Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home, 3724 Salem Road, Oxford, NC 27565.
Burial will be in Sunset Gardens, Henderson, N.C.
