Mrs. Mrs. Eva Jean Maddox Harris of South Boston died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012, at her home. She was born in Altavista on June 21, 1941 and was 71 years of age. She was the daughter of the late John Thomas Maddox and Johnsie King Maddox Sterns and was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lindsay ‘Bob’ Harris.
Mrs. Harris donated the land and buildings that today house the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, The Prizery and The Innovation Center. She was retired as owner-operator of Yancey Wholesale Supply.
Mrs. Harris is survived by one son, Robert Michael Harris and wife Donna of South Boston; two grandsons, Ryan Michael Harris and Grayson Lindsay Harris, both of South Boston; one step-granddaughter, Stacey M. Owen of Durham, N.C.; three sisters, Thelma Lee Barrett and husband Richard of Tupelo, Miss., Gloria Diane Shumate and husband Frank of Kings Mountain, N.C. and Linda Sue Maddox of South Boston; and a number of nieces, nephews and special friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, one brother, Junior Maddox; and one son, Gerald Lindsay Harris, also preceded Mrs. Harris in death.
Funeral services for Mrs. Harris will be held at Powell Funeral Home chapel Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Eure officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends at Powell Funeral Home on Thursday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. and other times at the home, 5129 River Road, South Boston.
