Gervis Gordon Gosney, 91, of 1235 Clays Mill Road, Halifax passed away Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012, at his home.
Mr. Gosney was born in Halifax County on Nov. 2, 1920, the son of the late Edward Gosney and Alma Carr Gosney. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Elizabeth Owen Gosney.
Five sisters, Louise G. Anderson, Edith G. Rickman, Lurleen G. Brown, Marguerite G. Palmer, and Jewell G. Scott; and three brothers, Arnie Gosney, Tommy Gosney and Clyde Gosney, also preceded Mr. Gosney in death.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Gosney was a World War II veteran. He had many friends and acquaintances through the years of his career in automobile sales.
He was a 1982 graduate of Mendenhall School of Auctioneering of High Point, N.C., and a bonded auctioneer for the State of Virginia. He was a member of Kerns Lodge No. 143 AF and AM Crystal Hill, a Past Master and Past District Deputy of the 37th Masonic District, a 32nd Degree member of Danville Scottish Rite, a member of ACCA Temple Richmond, past president of South Boston Shrine Club, member and past patron of Henry W. Woodall Chapter Order Eastern Star, and a member of Post 8 American Legion. Mr. Gosney had been a member of the Masons for 61 years, American Legion for over 60 years and the Shrine Club for over 50 years.
He was a faithful and active member of Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church where he had served as Sunday school director, Building and Grounds chairman, deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Funeral services for Mr. Gosney will be held Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at 3 p.m. at Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church. The Rev. Robert Hurd will conduct the service. Relatives will receive friends at 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
