Winfred Allen Childress, 66, of Wickliffe Road, Brookneal passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at home. He was the devoted husband of Marjorie Vaughan Childress.
Mr. Childress was born in Person County, N.C., on Feb. 21, 1946 the son of the late Samuel Childress and Gracie Coates Childress. He was a member of Falling River Baptist Church where he served as deacon and performed numerous other activities in the church. He was well known for making beautiful birdhouses for 23 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two stepchildren, Jefferson Moore and Tiffany Philpott (Gerald), all of Halifax; three grandchildren; one sister, Brenda Franklin of Crystal Hill; one brother, Maynard Childress (Dianne) of South Boston; two nieces; and three nephews. One brother, Wesley Childress, also preceded Mr. Childress in death.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at Falling River Baptist Church by the Revs. Keith Williams and Robert Hurd with interment following in the church cemetery.
The family received friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
