Mr. Alfred Simmon Owen of South Boston died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on Nov. 30, 1933 and was 78 years old. He was the son of the late Willie Fuller Owen and the late Gertrude Nichols Owen and married to Jean Conner Owen who survives.
He was a very active member of the South Boston Church of God where he was a Sunday school teacher. He was a lifetime member of the Halifax County Rescue Squad, a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the American Legion Post 8. He was the owner/operator of Owen’s Carpet Cleaning for over 35 years.
Mr. Alfred Simmons Owen is survived by his wife, Jean Conner Owen of South Boston; one daughter, Michelle O. Weddle and husband Zack of South Boston; two sons, Frosty Owen of Richmond, Dabo Owen and wife Ginger of South Boston; five grandchildren, Kristie Stevens and husband Mel of South Boston, Erica Grubbs and husband Mark of South Boston, Matthew Owen of South Boston, Chase Weddle and wife Jobeth of South Boston, Hunter Weddle of South Boston; two great-grandchildren, Allison and Madison Stevens; one sister, Levern Owen Hazelwood of Halifax; one brother, Bill Owen of South Boston. Four sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012 at 6 p.m. at the South Boston Church of God with the Revs. Rick Stigile, Bruce Hagy and George Gorman officiating. Burial will follow in the Halifax Memorial Gardens with military honors.
The family will receive friends Monday, Aug. 6, 2012 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the South Boston Church of God and other times at his home, 1413 Hodges Street, South Boston.
