Mrs. Vera Glenn Evans Long, age 89, departed this life Feb. 24, 2012 at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y.
Vera was born in Halifax County to the late William Dennis Evans and Jennie Daniel Evans. She was a former member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Halifax and served as the church clerk for many years.
In 1961 Vera and her husband, Amos P. Long, and their children relocated to Queens, N.Y. She obtained employment with the City of New York, Department of Social Services. After her retirement from City employment, she continued to be active in the St. Albans Congregational Church, St. Albans, Queens, N.Y. She was a member since 1962.
Funeral and burial services were held March 2, 2012 in New York. The Rev. Dr. Henry T. Simmons of St. Albans Congregational Church officiated.
Her husband, Amos; and their son, Daryl, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Carl Long and wife Ann of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ronald Long of Waldorf, Md.; four daughters, Margaret Stith and husband Roy of Hempstead, N.Y., Linda Fidanza and husband James of Jamaica Estates, N.Y., Charlotte Dendy and husband Mark of Cambria Heights, N.Y. and Grace Long of Corona, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gwendolyn Horne of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Dorothy Evans of Springfield and Jean Estwick of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.; one brother, William B. Evans of Illinois; one sister-in-law, Natalie Barksdale of Manhattan, N.Y.; nieces, nephews and cousins.
