Josephine Tucker Powell, a lifelong resident of Halifax County, died peacefully at home July 24, 2012. Born in May of 1929, she was the daughter of the late Kate Easley Edmunds and Henry Joseph Tucker.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Kenneth Wayne Powell, of Halifax; her daughter, Katherine Powell Heller (John) of Atlanta, Ga.; her son, K. Wayne Powell Jr. (Junko) of Ann Arbor, Mich.; her brother, Dr. Henry Joseph Tucker Jr. of Halifax; her granddaughters, Laura Flynn Heller of Boston, Mass., Hannah Carrington Heller of Atlanta, and Emma Kondo Powell of Ann Arbor.
Jo attended Mary Washington College and worked as a legal secretary for the law firm of Tuck, Bagwell, Dillard, and Mapp for 20 years. She also edited several historical texts before devoting her life to the role of consummate homemaker and mother. Jo was a devout Episcopalian and volunteered tirelessly for her beloved St. John's Church, serving on almost every committee and holding the office of Senior Warden as its first female. For this and for her many years of service as newsletter editor and cemetery committee chair and overseer, she was presented a Resolution of Appreciation from the Vestry of St. John's. Jo loved flowers and her garden and took great pleasure in arranging and sharing her floral creations. She had a passion for decorating, and many benefited from her extraordinary talent. She found her greatest joy in the simple pleasures of family and home and took pride in her Halifax roots.
Funeral services will take place Saturday, July 28, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Halifax with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at her home, 1047 Mountain Road, Halifax, following the burial.
