Dorothy Garland Cunningham of Somerville, N.J., widow of John H. Cunningham Sr., and a longtime resident of New Jersey, passed peacefully Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at Somerset Medical Center in New Jersey.
Mrs. Cunningham was born in Bluefield, W.Va. where her family lived at the time. The family moved back to Halifax where she was educated in the public schools.
After her marriage, she and her husband moved to Newark, N.J. and later to Plainfield, N.J. She retired from Mattel, Inc., the world’s largest toymaker, after working for them for more than 30 years. For a while during her retirement years, she and her husband moved back to South Boston.
At the time of her death, she was living in Somerset, N.J. She was 88 years old and a loving and caring mother and grandmother.
In addition to her husband, one son, John H. Jr.; and a special nephew, William Owen, also preceded Mrs. Cunningham in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Yvonne McKoy of Somerset; a daughter-in-law, Jean Cunningham of Richmond; five grandchildren, Brooke Cunningham of Baltimore, Md., Justin Cunningham of Camarillo, Calif., Joi M. (Markco) Toombs of Fredericksburg; Bradford (Shelcy) Cunningham of Columbus, Ohio, and Jamie McKoy of Somerset; one great-grandson, Jackson Cunningham of Columbus; a sister, Edith (Olander) Hamlett of Semora, N.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cunningham will be Saturday, June 23, at 3 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church, Alton.
