Roosevelt Nelson, 77, husband of Margie O. Nelson, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at his home.
Roosevelt was born in Halifax County and grew up in the Nelson area and was the son of the late John and Berta Lowery Nelson.
A farmer, Roosevelt was retired from the Department of Corrections as a correctional officer. He was a member of the Virgilina Volunteer Fire Department and a great neighbor.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, Roosevelt is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kaye and Kenneth Duncan, of Roxboro, N.C.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Theresa Nelson and Larry and Crystal Nelson, all of Nelson; Charles and Ruth Nelson of Buffalo Junction; one adopted son, Victor Jaurex Fernandex; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, John R. Nelson of Virgilina; three sisters, Virgie McCann of Roxboro, N.C., Nannie Taylor and Lucy Nelson, both of Richmond; and caregiver Alisha Bass.
The family received friends Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Nelson Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Nelson Baptist Church with the Reverends Don Wilson, Norman Talley, Jim McAlister and Buddy Rose officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
