Melvin J. Yancey Sr., 79, of 804 Berry Hill Road, South Boston died May 25, 2012 at The Woodview. He was born Feb. 10, 1933 in Halifax County, the son of the late Lottie Thomas and Willie Thornton Yancey. He was married to Natalie May Yancey of South Boston, who survives. Mr. Yancey was a retired truck driver for Burlington Industries, Inc. and was a member of Glenwood United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Maxine Yancey Coleman of Madison Heights and Lisa Yancey McNeil and husband Steven of Zebulon, N.C.; two sons, Christopher Ray Yancey and wife Bobbie of Evington and Jay Thornton Yancey and wife Melinda of Forest; one daughter-in-law, Judy Yancey of Amherst; one step-daughter, Lenora Garabedian and husband Ed of West Chester, Pa.; two step-sons, Kevin Rydzewski and wife Kim of Nottingham, N.H. and Darrin Rydzewski and wife Melissa of Alexandria, Ky.; one sister, Eunice Y. Slayton of Vernon Hill; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
One son, Melvin Jackson Yancey Jr.; one step-daughter, Dorene Monroe; two sisters, Virginia Harris and Frances Brown; one brother, Luther B. Yancey; and one granddaughter, Teresa Wright, also preceded Mr. Yancey in death.
Funeral services were held Sunday, May 27, 2012, at 3 p.m. at Glenwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Woodfin officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
The family received friends Saturday, May 26, 2012, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the home.
