Mabel Tanner

Mrs. Mabel Tanner, 81 of Charlotte, NC, passed September 17, 2009 at her residence. 

A funeral service was held Sept. 21 at noon at University Park Baptist Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Interment was in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Robert Jeter Tuck Jr.

Robert Jeter Tuck Jr., age 67, of Red Oak died Monday, Sept. 21, 2009.

Mr. Tuck is survived by one son, Robert J. Tuck III; two daughters, Robin Tuck and Paula Bell; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, James and Earl Tuck; and one sister, Mildred Burke. His parents, Robert J. Tuck Sr. and Louise Myers Tuck; and one sister, Juanita Tuck, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at the Chapel of Browning Funeral Home in Keysville. Burial will follow in Clover Cemetery.

William ‘Bill’ Brann Tuck Sr.

Mr. William ‘Bill’ Brann Tuck Sr. of Kingwoods Road, Virgilina died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at his home at the age of 58.

He was born in Halifax County on April 4, 1951, the son of the late Benjamin Pool Tuck Jr. and Cecil Wilson Tuck, who survives.

He was a crane operator, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Florence Avenue Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Tuck is survived by one son, William Brann Tuck Jr. of Virgilina; one daughter, Kristie Lynne Tuck of Virgilina; one brother, Wilson Lane Tuck of Virgilina; two sisters, Wanda Tuck Day and Winnie B. Tuck, both of Davidson, NC; a companion, Sherry Tart; one niece; one nephew, one great-niece; and one great-nephew.

Funeral services for Mr. Tuck were held Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. at Florence Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Stewart and the Rev. Norman Talley officiating. Burial followed in Virgilina Cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

Mildred ‘Peggy’ Louthan Shepherd

Mrs. Mildred ‘Peggy’ Louthan Shepherd, 92, died Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at her son’s home in South Boston.

She was born in Richmond on December 31, 1916 to the late Frank G. Louthan and Mildred M. Louthan and was married to the late Richard T. Shepherd. Mrs. Shepherd graduated from Washington College of the University of Richmond. She taught school in Richmond and Gloucester County where she and her husband moved in 1954.

Survivors include one daughter, Almeda S. Clements of Fredericksburg; two sons, R. Thomas ‘Tom’ Shepherd Jr. and wife, Virginia Bogard, of South Boston and Harry W.L. ‘Pete’ Shepherd of Gloucester; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Frank G. Louthan Jr. and wife, Marilyn, of Richmond.

Funeral services for Mrs. Shepherd will be held Thursday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. at Abingdon Episcopal Church in Gloucester.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Halifax County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 183, South Boston; Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston; or Trinity Episcopal Church, 515 Yancey Street, South Boston, 24592.

Francis ‘Frank’ Marchitto

Mr. Francis ‘Frank’ Marchitto of Covington Trail, Clover died Sept. 11, 2009 at the Woodview in South Boston. He was born in New Brunswick, NJ on March 26, 1946 and was 63 years old.

He was the son of the late Joseph Marchitto and Carolyn Bordtman Marchitto. He was a retired electrician and a Vietnam Conflict Navy Veteran.

Survivors include a brother, Thomas Marchitto of Clover.

Services will be private.

Alonza Bernard ‘Red’ Guthrie Jr.

Alonza Bernard ‘Red’ Guthrie Jr. of Scottsburg died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009. Graveside memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Oakland Cemetery.

A reception will immediately follow the service at First Presbyterian Church.

Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge of arrangements.

Dorthia ‘Dorothy Mae’ Gunn Drumwright

Mrs. Dorthia ‘Dorothy Mae’ Gunn Drumwright of Semora, NC, formerly of Halifax County, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at Duke Hospice in Hillsborough, NC at the age of 70.

Mrs. Drumwright was born in Halifax County on November 21, 1938 to the late Mr. James Henry Gunn and Mrs. Frances Bailey Gunn and was married to Mr. Leo A. Drumwright. She was a member of Mount Pisgah African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Survivors include her husband of the home; five daughters, Mrs. Paulette Smith and Ms. Delores Hill, both of Roxboro, NC, Mrs. Jacqueline Britton of Durham, NC, Ms. Gloria Yarborough of Baltimore, MD and Mr. Phyllis Lofton of Timberlake, NC; two sons, Mr. Michael Drumwright of Semora and Mr. Barry Drumwright of Fuquay Varina, NC; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Sara Smith of Chapel Hill, NC; three brothers, Mr. Willie Gunn of Roxboro, NC, Mr. Walter Gunn of South Boston and Mr. James Gunn of Temple Hill, MD; one foster brother, Mr. Robert Claiborne of Canton, Ohio; three sons-in-law, Mr. Richard Smith, Mr. Joseph Britton and Mr. Andrew Lofton; 13 sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Drumwright were held September 15 at 2 p.m. at Mount Pisgah AME Church, 1156 Woodsdale Road, Alton with Rev. Michael A. Dunn officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family received friends at the home, 695 Drumwright Road, Semora, NC.

Eleanor Wolf Cage

Mrs. Eleanor Wolf Cage of 4144 Stoney Ridge Road, Nathalie died Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg. She was born in Swan Creek, IL on March 3, 1922 and was 87 years of age.

She was the daughter of the late William Wayne Wolf and Elsie Taylor Wolf and was married for 49 years to Hubert Cage, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Cage was a member of Catawba Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, worked with the youth and served on the flower committee. She was a First Lieutenant with the Army Medical Corp having served with that division as a dietitian during World War II. She served 19-1/2 years as the dietitian at Halifax Community Hospital.

Survivors of Mrs. Cage include four daughters, Rev. Maxine Cage Crenshaw of Nathalie, Janet Cage Carter and husband, Jimmy, of Bedford, Dorothy Lynn ‘Dot’ Cage of Charlottesville and Cathy Cage Offield and husband, Danny, of Buffalo Junction; one granddaughter, Katlyn Offield of Buffalo Junction; two brothers, Richard Wolf of Abingdon, IL and Kenneth Wolf of Bushnell, IL; and one sister, Evelyn Chadderdon of Bushnell. Two brothers, Leland and Harold Wolf, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services for Mrs. Cage will be held tomorrow, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. at Catawba Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Morgan and Maxine Cage Crenshaw officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and other times at her home.
