Tyler Deion Bowes-McCoy

Baby, Tyler Deion Bowes-McCoy, 2 years old of Durham, NC joined the heavenly angels on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009 at Danville Regional Hospital, Danville.

The funeral will be held today, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. at Lawson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. Langston D. Logan Sr., along with Rev. Tim Bowes, Rev. Danny Johnson, Rev. Dwight Wilkerson and Rev. Ronnie Womack will officiate. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Visitation was Thursday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Cunningham and Nelson Funeral Home, and other times at the home of grandmother, Shelby McCoy-Pettiford, Roxboro, NC.

Baby Tyler born in Durham County, NC, leaves to cherish his memory his father, Ronald ‘Skeeter’ Bowes; mother, Corliss ‘Tori’ McCoy; three brothers, Shawn N. McRae Jr., Treshan D. McRae and Arick ‘Kyrell’ Downey; maternal grandmother, Shelby McCoy-Pettiford; paternal grandparents, Ronnie and Sandra Bowes; great-grandfather, Rufus Bowes; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives, and friends.

Cunningham and Nelson Funeral Home was in charge of final arrangements.

Jesse Alfred Glass Sr.

Mr. Jesse Alfred Glass Sr. of 1085 Hunters Trail, Nathalie died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on January 7, 1927 and was 82 years of age. He was the son of the late Lacy Glass and Marie Conner Glass and was married to Bercie Throckmorton Glass, who survives.

Mr. Glass was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church, an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of Masonic Lodge #143, Woodmen of the World and past member of the Triangle Fire Department.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Jesse A. ‘Al’ Glass and wife, Tina, of Nathalie; two grandchildren, Jesse Thomas ‘J.T.’ Glass and Jessica Elena Glass, both of Nathalie; one sister, Vivian Glass Smith of Nathalie; and a number of nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Sam and L.M. Glass, also preceded Mr. Glass in death.

Funeral services will be held today, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Sisk officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites.

The family received friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Hunting Creek Baptist Church and other times at his home.

Stanford Anderson Loftis

Stanford Anderson Loftis, 81, of 3105 Mt. Carmel Road, Alton died October 8, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Loftis was born in Halifax County on May 8, 1928, the son of the late Aubrey O. Loftis and the late Dorothy Ramsey Loftis. He was a member of Olive Branch United Methodist Church, was in the Marine Corps and was a retired farmer.

Survivors include one sister, Nelda L. Ingram of South Boston; one brother, Stuart Loftis of South Boston; three nephews, Wesley Whitlow, Curtis G. ‘Buddy’ Loftis Jr. and Stanley Loftis; three nieces, Christy Bomar, Gayle Loftis-Andretta and Paige Wood; numerous great nieces and great nephews.

In addition to his parents, two brothers, Curtis G. and Russell C. Loftis; one niece, Deborah W. Crews; and one nephew, Eddie Loftis, also preceded him in death.

Graveside services for Mr. Loftis will be held Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. at Olive Branch UMC Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Woodfin officiating.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

Glenna Estelle Martin Walker

Glenna Estelle Martin Walker, 78, of Chesterfield, went to be with Lord on Monday October 5, 2009. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Artie Swanson Walker; son, Walter S. Walker Sr.; sisters, Peggy M. Plummer, Morgie M. Arendall and Ethel M. Hawkins; brothers, Wesley H., Elmer A., Glenn S, and Franklin H. Martin. She is survived by her granddaughter, Angel J. Schmidt and Joe; grandson, Walter S. Walker Jr. and Kathy; special daughter, Joyce Eubank; daughter-in-law, Pam Walker; great-grandchildren, Chris, Jon, Devin, Joseph and Morgan; brother, Raymond L. Martin; and numerous wonderful nieces and nephews. 

The family received friends 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rte.10).

Her funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

Beatrice Ferrell Taylor

Mrs. Beatrice Ferrell Taylor of 7878 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond, formerly of Halifax County, died Thursday, Oct. 1 at Chippenham Medical Center at the age of 89.

Mrs. Taylor was born in Halifax County April 9, 1920 to the late Mr. Wynman Ferrell and Mrs. Laura Eldridge Ferrell. She was married to the late Mr. John Taylor.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Beatrice T. Timberlake of Staunton; three sons, Mr. John Taylor Jr. of Decatur, GA, Mr. Marshall Taylor of Charlottesville and Mr. Calvin Taylor of PA; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by five brothers, Mr. Eddie Ferrell, Mr. Jack Ferrell, Mr. Marshall Ferrell, Mr. Harrison Ferrell and Mr. Alfred Ferrell; and one step-sister, Ms. Susan Ferrell.

Funeral services for Mrs. Taylor will be held Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. at Crawford House Chapel with Rev. Harold Watkins officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Garden Cemetery, South Boston.

The family will receive friends Thursday at the service.

Public viewing for Mrs. Taylor will be today at the Crawford House Chapel from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Maggie Britton Davenport

Mrs. Maggie Britton Davenport of 1182 Lee Syd-Moore Road, Scottsburg, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond at the age of 70.

Mrs. Davenport was born in Halifax County on May 8, 1939 to the late Mr. Clarence Edward Britton and Mrs. Alice Byrd Lacks Britton. She was married to Mr. Edward L. Davenport and was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church in Clover.

Mrs. Davenport is survived by her husband, Mr. Edward L. Davenport of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Deborah Davenport-Freeman of Richmond; two sons, Mr. James (Buck) Davenport of Scottsburg and Mr. Edward (Big Ed) Davenport of South Boston; one grandson, Mr. Nathaniel Edward Davenport; one son-in-law, Mr. Ron Freeman; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Janice Davenport and Mrs. Deborah Davenport; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Lee Watkins of Scottsburg and Mrs. Martha Garner of Clover; six sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Davenport was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Howard Britton and Mr. John Britton, and by one sister, Mrs. Alice Byrd Perez.

Funeral services for Mrs. Maggie Britton Davenport will be held Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. with services at Bethel Grove Baptist Church in Clover with the Rev. William Hicks officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends and family at the chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence, 1182 Lee Syd-Moore Road, Scottsburg.

Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Byrne Mowery

Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Byrne Mowery, age 52, of Drakes Branch passed away Oct. 2, 2009.

She is survived by her parents, H. Russell and Grace Byrne of Halifax; her sister, Sue Bamberg of Halifax; her children, Adele Mowery Lyle and husband, Trey, of Keysville and Zachary Davis Mowery and girlfriend, Amy Montemayor, also of Keysville.

A memorial ser vice will be held today, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. at Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville.

Mary Ellen Carrington Morgan

Mrs. Mary Ellen Carrington Morgan of 1023 Morgan Lane, South Boston died Sept. 29 at Southside Community Hospital in Farmville at the age of 65.

Mrs. Morgan was born in Halifax County on March 12, 1944, and was the daughter of the late Mr. Charlie Louis Carrington and Mrs. Lillian Satterfield Carrington. She was married to Mr. Joe Louis Morgan Sr. and was a member of Dan River Bethel Baptist Church. Mrs. Morgan was employed by Tultex, Inc. for many years.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Mr. Joe Louis Morgan Jr. of South Boston; one daughter, Mrs. Shelia James of New Rochelle, NY; four grandchildren; six sisters, Mrs. Savannah Morgan, Mrs. Sue Morgan, Mrs. Yvonne Medley and Mrs. Patricia Richardson, all of South Boston, Mrs. Jean Breedlove of Martinsville and Mrs. Phyllis White of North Little Rock, AR; three brothers, Mr. Oscar Carrington and Mr. Carnell Carrington, both of South Boston and Mr. Phillip Carrington of Georgia; one ant, Mrs. Estelle Farmer of New Jersey; one uncle, Mr. Robert Furges; her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jennifer Morgan; son-in-law, Mr. Kevin James; mother-in-law, Ms. Pearl L . Morgan; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Morgan will be held Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Dwight Wilkerson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at her residence.

Madeline Gather Brown Wolfe

Mrs. Madeline Gather Brown Wolfe of Hardings Mill Road, Nathalie died Sept. 29 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 93.

Mrs. Wolfe was born in Halifax County on April 8, 1916 to the late Mr. Bennie Brown and Mrs. Ella Wheeler Brown. She was married to the late Mr. Cleveland Wolfe and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. She was also a former member of Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York and was a retired seamstress.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Carol Mjaanes of South Boston; a god-son, Mr. Ralph King of New York, NY; and a host of devoted nieces and nephews, other loving relatives and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Christine Henry, Josephine Diallo, Lenna Simmons and Eva Collins; three brothers, Bennie Brown Jr., Joshua Brown and Christopher Brown; and a foster brother, Johnny Cuevas.

Funeral services for Mrs. Wolfe will be held Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Nathalie with Rev. James E. Traynham officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the service Sunday.

Public viewing for family and friends will be Saturday from noon until 6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home chapel.

Pastor Dr. Barbara Howerton Williams

It is with profound sorrow we announce the passing of Pastor Dr. Barbara Howerton Williams on Sept. 25, 2009.  She is survived by her loving husband, Pastor Horace Williams; two daughters, Sakina (Joseph) Sweeney and Tammy (Lonnie) Burton; one grandson, Lonnie Jr.; three sisters, Lucinda (Robert) Williams of Halifax, Judy Howerton of Keeling and Lenora Kay Womack of Salem; six brothers, Wallace Jr., Darry, and Calvin (Bobbie) Howerton of South Boston, Earl Howerton of Richmond, Lawrence (Marsha) Howerton of Waldolf, MD and Steven Ray Howerton of Danville. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace (Tot) and Jearlean Howerton; and two sisters, Ollie Miller and Elritha Carter.

Funeral services will be held at the Mount Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1079 Birch-Elmo Road South Boston, on Oct. 3. Viewing will be at 1 p.m. and the service at 2 p.m.  Interment will be held at the church cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Judy Howerton, 20048 Old Richmond Road, Keeling.
