Rev. Robert Edward Watts

The Rev. Robert Edward “Bob” Watts of L. P. Bailey Memorial Highway, Nathalie, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at MCV in Richmond at the age of 69.

He was born in Charlotte County on Oct. 3, 1940 to the late Nathaniel and Lester Overby Watts and was married to Sandra Guthrie Watts, who survives.

Rev. Watts was a member and minister of Hitesburg Baptist Church and a member of Aarons Creek Ruritan Club. Before entering the ministry he served in the U.S. Army and was a supervisor at Burlington Industries in Drakes Branch.

Rev. Watts is survived by his wife of the home; three brothers, Bill Watts and wife Betty of Keysville, Kenny Watts and wife Faye of Saxe, David Watts and wife Sherry of Keysville, Tommy Watts of Keysville; one sister, Mary Ann Smith and husband Robert of Christiansburg; one sister-in-law, Colleen Elder and husband Dennis of Brookneal; one brother-in-law, Jasper J. Guthrie of Florida; one step-brother-in-law, Ralph Dews of Farmville; a number of nieces and nephews; and two dear cousins, Betty Hardy and husband W.C. and Margaret Rickman, all of Keysville.

Funeral services for the Rev. Robert Edward Watts will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in the Hitesburg Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family received friends Sunday from 6 until 9 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home and is receiving friends other times at the Hitesburg Baptist parsonage, 4097 Aarons Creek Road, Virgilina.

Josephine Traynham Wade

Mrs. Josephine Traynham Wade of Halifax died Tuesday, Nov. 3 at Berry Hill Nursing Home at the age of 87.

Mrs. Wade was born in Halifax County Nov. 3, 1922 to the late Mr. Samuel Traynham and Mrs. Elizabeth Paige Elizabeth Morton Traynham. She was married to the late Mr. Robert Thomas Wade and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Survivors of Mrs. Wade include two sons, Mr. Robert Junior Wade of South Boston and Mr. Samuel Wade of Concord; nine grandchildren including the devoted Mrs. Dianne Coleman; 16 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Karen Wade and Mrs. Samantha Wade; one niece and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Wade was preceded in death by two daughters, Ms. Rosa Lee Traynham and Ms. Louvenia Traynham; five sisters, Ms. Bertha Lou Traynham, Ms. Eliza Traynham, Mrs. Catherine Jones, Mrs. Hannah Sprattley and Mrs. Amanda Edmonds; and one brother, Mr. James Traynham.

Funeral services for Mrs. Wade will be held Saturday, Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. Ronald Claiborne officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Dianne Coleman, 730 North Main Street, Halifax. Public viewing for family and friends will be Friday, Nov. 6 at the chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home, South Boston.

Earnest Julius Carr

Mr. Earnest Julius Carr of 754 North Main Street, Halifax, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 67.

Mr. Earnest Julius Carr was born July 6, 1942 to the late Mr. Phillip Carr and Mrs. Millie Coleman Carr and was married to Mrs. Vernelle Lovelace Carr. He was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church and was a United States Army veteran.

Mr. Earnest Julius Carr is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vernelle Lovelace Carr of the home; one daughter, Ms. Lanette Carr of Temple Hills, MD; one son, Mr. Michael Carr of Temple Hills; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Coleman and Ms. Brenda Carr, both of Halifax; two brothers, Mr. Morris Carr of Woodbridge and Mr. Harris Carr of Halifax; one son-in-law; one daughter-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Ms. Angela Smith, and one brother, Mr. Joshua “JP” Carr.

Funeral services for Mr. Earnest Julius Carr will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. at Banister Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. William F. Carr officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by the United States Honor Guard and American Legion Post #99.

Public viewing for Mr. Earnest Julius Carr will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax. The family will receive friends at the residence, 754 North Main Street, Halifax.

Stephanie Jeanette Dudley

Mrs. Stephanie Jeanette Dudley of Nathalie died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at her home.

She was born April 10, 1949 in Staunton and was 60 years old at her death. She was the daughter of Wayne Scott Nulty and Thelma Garrett Massey, and she was a member of the Cody Church of God of Prophesy.

Mrs. Dudley is survived by one daughter, Rebecca Michelle Burgess and husband Wayne of Nathalie; four grandchildren, Brandon Angel, Curtis Francisco, Cody and Seth Dawson; one brother, Corneil Nulty of Churchville; her father, Wayne Scott Nulty of Stuarts Draft; her mother, Thelma Garrett Massey of Greenville; and one sister, Pam Lane of Nathalie.

She was preceded in death by one son, Matthew O. Cash.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Cody Church of God of Prophesy with the Rev. Lacy King officiating. Burial will follow at the Catawba Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held tonight (Monday) at Powell Funeral Home from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of Rebecca and Wayne Burgess, 5077 Liberty Road, Nathalie.

Robert Edward Hatcher Sr.

Mr. Robert Edward Hatcher Sr., age 84, of 1037 Macdonald Road, Scottsburg, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at his home.

Born Nov. 23, 1924, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Hatcher and Maggie Rickmond Hatcher.

Mr. Hatcher was a member of Fork Baptist Church, retired owner/operator of Hatcher’s Auto service, former member of the Easy Street Band and was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Edna Snead Hatcher of Scottsburg; two sons, Robert Hatcher Jr. and wife Lisa of South Boston, and Eddie Hatcher and wife Shelby of Scottsburg; two daughters, Janice McKinney of South Boston, and Peggy Bomar and husband Buddy of Scottsburg; a brother, Floyd Hatcher of Scottsburg; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a special family friend, Brenda Conner.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Kevin Hatcher, and three sisters, Alice Mills, Mary Shook and Ula Hatcher.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. David Rathel and the Rev. Aubrey Heath conducting the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home Monday night from 7 until 8:30 and at other times at the home.

Vincent Millian Wright

Mr. Vincent Millian Wright of Nathalie died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was born in Halifax County on Sept. 9, 1953 and was 56 years old at his death. He was the son of the late Berkley Stafford Wright Sr. and Virginia Wade Wright and was married to Deborah Dejarnette Wright. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Millstone.

Mr. Wright is survived by his wife, Deborah Wright of Nathalie; two sons, Shannon Vincent Wright and Richard “Richie” Wright, both of Nathalie; one daughter, Melissa W. Gravitt and husband Jason of Clarksville; one grandson, Caleb Wyatt Gravitt of Clarksville; his mother, Virginia Wade Wright of Halifax; four sisters, Velvetta Wright Littles of Nathalie, Valerie Wright Waller and husband Mike of Nathalie; Vanessa Wright Cole and husband Mark of South Boston; Wendy Wright Beard of Halifax; and one brother, Berkley S. “Skeeter” Wright of Vernon Hill.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Millstone with the Rev. Robert Blake conducting the service.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister-in-law, Barbara Crews, 17164 L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway, Nathalie.

Ruby L. Lacks

Ruby L. Lacks, 96, of 1047 Mosley Ferry Road, Clover died Oct. 28, 2009 at her home.

Mrs. Lacks was born August 17, 1913 in Halifax County the daughter of the late Thomas U. Lacks and Hattie Whitlow Lacks and was married to the late Edgar Carlton Lacks Sr.

Mrs. Lacks was a member of Clover Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Lacks Wazeka of Clover and Brenda L. McDannald and husband, Mac, of South Boston; one son, E. Carlton Lacks Jr. and wife, Deborah, of Brookneal; one brother, Roy C. Lacks and wife, Sylvia, of Halifax; eight grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, five sisters and three brothers also preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. at Clover Baptist Church with the Revs. Lloyd Moore and Bill Greenwood officiating. Burial will follow in Clover Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Oct. 30 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Clover Baptist Church and other times at the home.

Fidelia Terry Womack

Mrs. Fidelia Terry Womack of 2238 Mountain Road, Halifax died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at The Woodview. She was born in Halifax County November 12, 1920 and was 88 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Howson Bailey Terry and Effie Tatum Terry and was married to the late James K. Womack.

Mrs. Womack was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by seven sisters, Ruth Terry, Bobby Yates, Sally Ingram, Alice Epps, Kate Sparrow, Edna Martin and Lucy Dickerson; and one brother, Willie Terry.

A graveside service for Mrs. Womack will be held Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill Wilkins officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Nancy Terry, 2145 Union Church Road, Halifax.

Charlie Tucker

Charlie Tucker, 82, of 3184 Pumping Hill Road, Nathalie passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 2009 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born March 23, 1927 in Campbell County, he was the son of the late Phil Tucker and Mrs. Avery Word Tucker.

Mr. Tucker was a farmer and a member of Second Buffalo Baptist Church, Nathalie.

Survivors include his wife, Ella Tucker of the residence; three daughters, Dena Carden (Stanley), Mary Hall (Edward) and Deborah Layne (Michael), all of Long Island; three sons, Charlie Tucker Jr. of Nathalie, Thomas Tucker (Joyce) of Gretna and Henry Tucker (Gail) of Brookneal; two brothers, Samuel Tucker (Jean) and Stephen Tucker, all of Roanoke; four sisters, Lilly Boyd of Nathalie, Ella Minor, Fannie Madison and Della Gilliam (Charlie), all of Roanoke; 22 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. at Second Buffalo Baptist Church by Rev. Sandy Palmer with interment in the church cemetery. Viewing and visitation will be Wednesday at the funeral home from 5 to 8 with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m.

Antonio Luiz Darden

Mr. Antonio Luiz Darden of 1084 Woods Creek Lane, Scottsburg died Oct. 26 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 47.

Mr. Darden was born in New York on Oct. 31, 1961 and was the son of Mrs. Janet Wapples Anderson and the late Mr. Benjamin Anderson. He was married to Mrs. Cheryl Coles Darden and was a member of St. Paschal Catholic Church. Mr. Darden was a United States Army Veteran and was an American Legion Post 99 member.

Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Ms. Shimea Darden of Scottsburg; one son, Mr. Antonio Luiz Darden II of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren; his mother of Clover; one sister, Ms. Janet Mason of Clover; one brother, Mr. James Darden of Clover; his god-mother, Ms. Antonitte Dubose of Jacksonville, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Darden will be held Friday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. at St. Paschal Catholic Church with Father John Kazibwe and Rev. Mattie Carr officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors by the United States Honor Guard and American Legion Post 99.

The family will be receiving friends at the residence. Public viewing for family and friends will be Thursday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax.
