Geraldine Scott Adams 

Geraldine Scott Adams, 87, of Lynchburg Avenue, Brookneal, passed away Thursday, Dec. 3, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Richard Thomas Adams Sr.

Mrs. Adams was born in Brookneal, May 28, 1922, daughter of the late Carroll Clark Scott and Blanche Harrison Scott. She was a member of Brookneal Baptist Church and retired secretary and treasurer of Adams Lumber Co., Inc.

She is survived by three sons, Richard T. Adams Jr. and wife June of Brookneal, James E. Adams and wife Peri of Nathalie, Robert C. Adams and wife Denise of Rockville; one granddaughter, Virginia Adams King and husband Andrew of Raleigh, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was conducted 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, in Wickliffe Cemetery by the Rev. Douglas Saunders and Rev. Elton McDowell.

The family received friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Henderson Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Brookneal, and are receiving friends at the residence other times.

James Elijah Calloway Jr.

Mr. James Elijah Calloway Jr. of Williams Trail, Halifax, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at Berry Hill Nursing Home at the age of 47.

Mr. Calloway was born in Halifax County on March 29, 1962 to the late Mr. James E. Calloway Sr. and Mrs. Dudley Fallen Calloway and was a member of St. Luke Apostolic Church.

Mr. James E. Calloway Jr. is survived by one son, Mr. James Junior Lane of Washington, DC; eight sisters, Mrs. Cynthia Penick of Halifax, Mrs. Caleathia Graves of Sutherlin, Ms. Gwendolyn Calloway, Ms. Sandra Calloway and Ms. Mary Calloway, all of Maryland, Mrs. Lillie Hamlett of South Boston, Mrs. Deloris Cottingham and Ms. Annie Ruth Martin, both of Washington; three brothers, Mr. Gregory Calloway of Washington, Mr. Albert Martin and Mr. Willie Martin, both of New York; four brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Calloway was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Wanda Harrison.

A memorial services for Mr. James Elijah Calloway Jr. was held on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. at St. Luke Apostolic Church with Elder Harry J. Betts officiating.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 1145 Williams Trail, Halifax.

Grace Sue Cole Elliott

Mrs. Grace Sue Cole Elliott of 6132 Red Bank Road, Virgilina, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 85.

She was born in Halifax County on June 4, 1924 to the late Robert Edward Cole and Janie Lowery Cole and was married to the late Alvah Fletcher “Pete” Elliott.

Mrs. Elliott was a retired school bus driver who drove for the Halifax County School System for 33 years. She attended Virgilina School, followed by beauty school in Raleigh, and she previously owned and operated a beauty shop in Virgilina. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Elliott is survived by two daughters, Enola Gay Elliott Harvey of Lynchburg, Donna Jane Elliott of Ringgold; two sisters, Elsie Ford of Virgilina, Primrose Goodwin of South Boston; three granddaughters, Emily Harvey, Sarah Harvey, Molly Harvey; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Pete Cole, Waverly Cole and Elvin Cole.

Funeral services for Mrs. Elliott will be held Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Gorman and the Rev. Bill LaWall officiating. Burial will follow in the Virgilina Cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at Brooks Funeral Home Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home.

The family would like to thank Addie Burnette, Lorraine Hughes, Margaret Lawson, Phyllis Carrington and the staff at Halifax Regional Hospital for their special care of Mrs. Elliott.

Curtis Darnell Jones

Mr. Curtis Darnell Jones of 3109 Crystal Hill Road, Crystal Hill, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, in Halifax County at the age of 58.

Mr. Jones was born in Halifax County on Aug. 15, 1951 to Mrs. Willie Mae Davis Jones and the late Mr. Henry Herbert Jones. He was a member of Millstone Baptist Church and was an employee of ABB Inc.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of the home, Mrs. Carolyn Featherstone Jones; two daughters, Mrs. Tonya Featherstone Harris of Warrenton, Mrs. Sherry Jones Stewart of Halifax; two sons, Mr. Kelly Featherstone of Nathalie, Mr. Anthony Jones of Knightdale, NC; six grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Willie Mae Davis Jones of Halifax; one sister, Mrs. Louise Jones Byrd of Halifax; three brothers, Mr. Henry Jones Jr. of Philadelphia, Mr. Lawrence Jones of Lynchburg, Mr. Kenneth Jones of Nathalie; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Marcella Featherstone of Nathalie, Mrs. Schmett Jones of Knightdale; two sons-in-law, Mr. Johnny Harris of Warrenton, Mr. Sheldon Stewart of Halifax; four aunts; six sisters-in-law, Mrs. Anna Jones, Mrs. Catherine Medley, Mrs. Ellen Featherstone, Mrs. Carolyn Featherstone, Mrs. Penny Featherstone, Mrs. Rhonda Jones; five brothers-in-law, Mr. Larry Byrd, Mr. Joe Medley, Mr. Henry Featherstone, Mr. George Featherstone, Mr. Anthony Featherstone; a very devoted friend, Mr. Cecil Younger; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Curtis Darnell Jones will be held Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. with services at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Featherston officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Willard Leslie ‘Snake-Eye’ Overby Sr.

Mr. Willard Leslie “Snake-Eye” Overby Sr. of 3019 E. Hitesburg Road, Virgilina died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 87.

He was born in Halifax County on October 24, 1922 to the late Elvin Overby and Fannie Elliott Overby, and he was married to Ruth Royster Overby, who survives.

Mr. Overby was a heavy equipment operator and was employed by Lawrence Nunn. He was a member of Hitesburg Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Brotherhood and a former Sunday school superintendent. He also was a former director of the youth choir, taught youth Sunday school and was a member of the adult choir.

Mr. Overby is survived by his wife of the home; three daughters, Mitzie Waller and husband Dwight of South Boston, Connie Cranfill and husband Bobby of Virgilina, Delores Hamlett and husband Hank of South Boston; one son, Willard Leslie Overby Jr. and wife Debbie of Virgilina; one sister, Lois Goad of Nelson; nine grandchildren, Freddie Coates Jr., Greg Cranfill, Gwendellyn Driskill, Lori Wade, Beth Ralston, Rocki Hamlett, Melanie Medley, Joni Crain, Chad Overby; eight great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, Dwight Waller Jr., April Warf, Donna Hamlett and Harold Hamlett Jr.

Funeral services for Mr. Overby will be held Monday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. at Hitesburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Waverly Lorenzo Richardson

Mr. Waverly Lorenzo Richardson of 1126 Richardson Lane, Alton, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 71.

Mr. Richardson was born July 19, 1938 in Halifax County to the late Mr. Joseph Richardson and Mrs. Viola Wiley Richardson. He was married to the late Mrs. Veola Wade Richardson and was a member of Crossroad Baptist Church.

Mr. Richardson is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Jacky Hemphill of Clinton, MD; two granddaughters, Chae Hemphill of Hyattsville, MD and Chanon Hemphill of Clinton; three sisters, Mrs. Pecola Pickens and Mrs. Gloria Robinson, both of Trenton, NJ, Mrs. Cecelia Harper of Willingboro, NJ; one aunt, Mrs. Blanch Jones of Danville; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Luetta Scott of Alton; seven brothers-in-law, Mr. George Pickens and Mr. Harold Robinson, both of Trenton, Mr. Paul Harper of Willingboro, Mr. John Wade of South Boston, Mr. James Wade and Mr. Edward Bauldwin, both of Alton, Mr. Arthur Wade of Mt. Vernon, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Waverly Lorenzo Richardson will be held Monday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. with services at Crossroad Baptist church with the Rev. John Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Public viewing for Mr. Richardson was held Sunday, Dec. 6, at the chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home from noon until 6 p.m.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1126 Richardson Lane, Alton.

Christy Lynn Whitlow Bomar

Christy Lynn Whitlow Bomar of Philpott Road died Dec. 3, 2009 in North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She was 54.

She was a bus driver for the Halifax County School System, A Halifax County native, Mrs. Bomar was born Feb. 27, 1955, a daughter of Nelda L. Ingram and the late Alfred Whitlow.

She was a member of Olive Branch United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Bomar is survived by one daughter, Cassidy B. Prevett and husband, Danny, of Alton; one son, Michael Bomar of South Boston; her mother Nelda L. Ingram and husband Ira of South Boston; and a brother, Wesley Whitlow of Alton.

Other survivors include two grandchildren, Hailey and Jules Prevett; two nieces, Tammy C. Glenn and husband Bill, and Tyra C. Keene and husband Kirby; three great nieces, Jessica Speer, Bailey Kate Glenn and Ellie Keene; and a great nephew, Jack Speer.

Mrs. Bomar was predeceased by her husband, Michael T. Bomar; her father, Alfred Whitlow; and a sister, Deborah W. Crews.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the home.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 6, at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Bob Woodfin and the Rev. Doug Gibson officiating. Interment will be in Olive Branch U.M.C. Cemetery.

Shirley Jefferson Haymes

Mr. Shirley Jefferson Haymes of 1144 Hunters Lane, South Boston died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 65.

Mr. Haymes was born in Halifax County on Dec. 24,1943, to the late Mr. Cornell Hester Haymes and Mrs. Maria Robertson Haymes. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Brenda Knight of Danville, Ms. Katie Haymes and Ms. Elizabeth Clement, both of South Boston; two brothers, Mr. George S. Haymes and Mr. Spencer Haymes, both of South Boston; two brothers-in-law, Mr. Charles Knight and Mr. Charles Dixon; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lillian Haymes, Mrs. Arlease Haymes and Mrs. Mary Katherine Haymes; two aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many devoted friends including Mr. James Barnett. In addition to his parents, three sisters and two brothers preceded Mr. Haymes in death.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 5 at noon at Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Frederick Eily officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends Friday evening from 6 to 7 at Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence.

Reafer S. Stewart

Reafer S. Stewart, 91, of 11211 Stewart Trail, Virgilina died Dec. 1, 2009 at her home. She was born October 14, 1918 in Person County NC the daughter of the late James William and Harriett Stuart Stewart and was married to the late Caleb Henry Stewart.

Mrs. Stewart was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include four daughters, Annie Daniel of Alton, Jerilene Phipps of Richmond, Rita Rogers of Cary, NC and Nina Bryant of Crewe; five sons, Gaylon Stewart of Virgilina, Dwight Stewart of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Ervin Stewart of Richmond, James Stewart of South Boston and Rev. Jack Stewart of Virgilina; one sister, Mary S. Martin of Virgilina; one brother, Mack Stewart; 27 grandchildren; and 54 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, one son, Hugh Stewart; and two grandsons, Billy Oakley and Adam Bryant, also preceded Mrs. Stewart in death.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Norman Talley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family received friends Dec. 3 from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Judith Buchanan Kean Shaw

Judith Buchanan Kean Shaw, 66, of Richmond died Nov. 29, 2009 at John Randolph Medical Center.

Mrs. Shaw was born Sept. 22, 1943, in Halifax County the daughter of the late Howard Raymond ‘Bose’ Buchanan and the late Evelyn Tharpe Buchanan. She was first married to the late Jerry Dean Kean and then to the late Paul Jesse Shaw. Mrs. Shaw was a member of Clover Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, J. Kevin Kean; three grandchildren, Kendahl Renae Kean, Dalton Sloane Kean and Michael John McDaniel Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Kean McDaniel and husband, Michael, all of Chesterfield; one brother, Stewart ‘Bucky Buchanan of Orlando, FL; one sister, Brenda B. Berry of Stephens Church; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Shaw will be held Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. at Clover Baptist Church with Rev. Lloyd Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Buchanan Family Cemetery on Springhill Farm.
