Christine Gilley Davis

Christine Gilley Davis, 92, of Martinsville died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at Blue Ridge Rehab where she was a resident. She was born in Patrick County on Aug. 6, 1917 to Joshua Robert Gilley Sr. and Mamie Fulcher Gilley. She retired from First Baptist Church of Martinsville where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Mary Kirk Sunday school class, WMU, Jubilate Choir and the Thursday Morning Bible Study.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Byron Allen “Dick” Davis, three sisters and one brother.
She is survived by a daughter, Sara Jane Davis of South Boston and three grandchildren, William Todd Rorrer, Elizabeth Paige Rorrer and Christopher Mark Rorrer.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Martinsville with interment to follow in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 12:30 to 1:45, prior to the funeral service at the church.

Jane Rae Ellixson

Miss Jane Rae Ellixson, age 94, of South Boston, Virginia, and formerly of Montgomery, Alabama, died on December 15, 2009. Miss Ellixson was born in Virgilina, Virginia on December 9, 1915. She is survived by her sister, Paris Ellixson Gravitt of South Boston, Virginia. She is also survived by eighteen (18) nieces and nephews and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Miss Ellixson was preceded in death by her parents, Nellie Mae Kidd and Cornelius LeRoy Ellixson, by her sister, Beth Ellixson Tuck and brothers: Joseph Kidd Ellixson, Woodrow Valentine Ellixson Sr., Graham James Ellixson Sr., Gerald Wade Ellixson and Cornelius LeRoy Ellixson.

The family will receive friends at the home of Paris Ellixson Gravitt, 1701 Wilkerson Street, South Boston, VA.

Graveside services will be held at Virgilina Cemetery on Thursday, December 17, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Dr. Russell Lee and Reverend Edward Rigg officiating.

Carolyn Crenshaw Link

Carolyn Crenshaw Link, 69, of 4055 Cluster Springs Road, Alton, died Dec. 13, 2009 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born May 8, 1940 in Halifax County the daughter of the late Odell Crenshaw and Irene Thaxton Crenshaw and was married to Emmitt Link, who survives.

Mrs. Link was a member of Centerville Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Teresa Arrington and husband, Earl, of South Boston and Charlene Rimmer and husband, Todd, of Durham, NC; one son, Donald Link Sr. of South Boston; a sister, Hilda Rimmer and husband, Noel, of Alton; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Jody Wilborn and wife, Mary; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Link will be held today, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. at Centerville Baptist Church with the Revs. Todd McClure and Donald Link Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Visitation was held at Centerville Baptist Church Tuesday, Dec. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. and other times at the home.

William Leedell Beard

Mr. William Leedell Beard of 1182 Hall’s Trail, Halifax died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at his home. He was born in Halifax County Feb. 25, 1934, and was 75 years of age. Mr. Beard was the son of the late Forest M. Beard and Frances Clardy Beard and was married to Lorine R. Beard, who survives.  He was a member of Mountain Road Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Kim Comer of Halifax; one son, Gary W. Beard of Roanoke; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Lubin of Vernon Hill and Doris Sharp of Durham, NC; one stepson, Ronald Boelte of South Boston; one sister, Marguerite Womack of Vernon Hill; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. One son, Danny William Beard; and one brother, Douglas Beard, also preceded Mr. Beard in death.

A graveside service will be held at Halifax Memorial Gardens Saturday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Coy Terry and Randy Patterson officiating.

The family will receive friends today, Dec. 11, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at his home.

Edward Orrell Chandler

Edward Orrell Chandler, 65, of Lynchburg, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009. He was the husband of Maggie Ragans Chandler.

Ed is also survived by three children, Traci Chandler Viar of Forest, David Thomas Chandler of Mechanicsville, and Martin Edward Chandler of Forest.

A celebration of Ed’s life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory, Lynchburg.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the service.

Ira Stanley Crowder

Mr. Ira Stanley Crowder of Detroit, MI, formerly of Halifax County, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, in Detroit at the age of 52.

Mr. Crowder was born May 2, 1957 and was educated in the Halifax County Public Schools. He was a member of Owens Grove Baptist Church and was employed by Com Cast Cable Company in Detroit.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Mary C. Royal of Detroit; a devoted friend, Ms. Marcelle Brown of Detroit; four step-children, Ira Dashanta, Lachandra, Robert and Curtis Jeffress, all of Detroit; four brothers, Mr. Calvin Crowder of Virgilina, Mr. Alvin Crowder and Mr. Ronald Crowder, both of Detroit, and Mr. Corey Bailey of Roxboro, NC; two half-sisters, Ms. Donna Melvin and Ms. Patricia Wimbish of Roxboro; two step-brothers, Mr. James Royal Jr. and Mr. Howard Royal, both of Detroit; one uncle, Mr. James Walton Sr. of Cluster Springs; and a host of other relatives and friends. Two sisters, Ms. Bonnie Crowder and Ms. Karen Dixon, preceded Mr. Crowder in death.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Dec. 12 at 1 p.m. at Crawford House Chapel in Halifax with Rev. John Leigh officiating. Burial will follow in the Owens Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. Calvin Crowder, 2021 Virgilina Road, Virgilina.

James Curtis West

Mr. James Curtis West, formerly of Nathalie, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, in Philadelphia, PA. He was the son of the late Major and Mary Coleman West of Nathalie.

Mr. West is survived by his wife, Ruth West, of Willingboro, NJ; his daughter, Colette Denise West of Bowie, MD; his sister, Evelyn C. Womble of Baltimore, MD; sisters-in-law, Pauline Heyman of Paterson, NJ, Peggy Jefferson (Melvin) of Teaneck, NJ, Hattie P. West of Suffolk, Ann Heyman of Paterson, and Carrie McGuire of Paterson; brothers-in-law, Butch Dye (Ann) of Chester, SC, John Heyman (Lori) of East Orange, NJ; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 11, at 1 p.m., at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Nathalie. Interment with military honors will follow in the West Family Cemetery in Nathalie.

William Lloyd Holt

Mr. William Lloyd Holt of 3074 Alton Post Office Road, Alton died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at The Woodview at the age of 64.

Mr. Holt was born April 3, 1945 to the late Mr. James Sydnor Holt and Mrs. Anna Scott Holt. He was married to Mrs. Shirley Yancey Holt and was a member of Owens Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of the home; one God-son, Mr. Donte Hamlett of Alton; two sisters, Ms. Charlotte A. Holt and Mrs. Margaret H. Chandler, both of South Boston; his father-in-law, Mr. Henry Yancey (Betty) of Alton; six sisters-in-law, Ms. Mattie Holt of New Jersey, Ms. Loris Clay, Mrs. Edith Hamlett, Ms. Frances White, Ms. Diann Yancey and Mrs. Mary Ann Yancey, all of Alton; two devoted nieces, Mrs. Ruth Garner and Mrs. Helen Booze; a devoted nephew, Mr. Gary Yancey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Two brothers, Mr. Alvis T. Holt and Mr. Belvin C. Holt, also preceded Mr. Holt in death.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m. at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. H.M. Pettiford officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Rosa Yancey Lowery

Rosa Yancey Lowery, 93, of 1242 Bold Springs Road, South Boston died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Lowery was born March 25, 1916 in Halifax County to the late James Phillip Yancey and the late Sarah Morris Yancey and was married to the late Keister F. ‘Bug’ Lowery. She was a member of South Boston Church of God where she was a Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Lowery was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Erma L. Joyner and husband, Randy, and Myrtle L. Spangler; one son, Lawrence P. Lowery and wife, Phyllis, all of South Boston; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Five sisters and two brothers, also preceded Mrs. Lowery in death.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lowery will be held Thursday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Bruce Hagy officiating. Burial will follow in Black Walnut Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends this evening, Dec. 9, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the home of Lawrence and Phyllis Lowery, 1248 Bold Springs Road, South Boston.

Mrs. Jenny Veola Green Scott

Mrs. Jenny Veola Green Scott of 6179 Mt. Laurel Road, Clover died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at her residence at the age of 86.

Mrs. Scott was born in Halifax County on Oct. 27, 1923 to the late Mr. Henry Lewis Green and Mrs. Emma E. Collins Green and was married to the late Mr. Luke Alexander Scott. She was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church of Clover.

Survivors include two sons, Mr. Thomas A. Scott and Mr. Tyrone W. Scott, both of Clover; two daughters, Ms. Freedy ‘Freda’ Green of Danville and Ms. Jacqueline G. Craighead of Clover; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Mr. Melvin Green of Clover and Mr. Carl Green of Bronx, NY; three daughters-in-law, Mrs. Josephine Morrison, Mrs. Deborah Scott and Mrs. Joyce Scott; five sisters-in-law, Mrs. Jacqueline Green, Mrs. Mary Green, Mrs. Katrina Green, Ms. Gracie Scott and Mrs. Josephine Jeffress; a host of other grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by one daughter, Ms. Deloris Scott; one grandson, Mr. Clinton Craighead; four sisters; and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. at Bethel grove Baptist Church with Pastor William Hicks and Rev. Vealer Staten officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
