Beatrice Odellia Edmonds

Ms. Beatrice Odellia Edmonds of Bridgeport, CT, formerly of Halifax County, died Dec. 25 at Bridgeport Hospital at the age of 61.

Ms. Edmonds was born in Halifax County on July 9, 1948 and was the daughter of the late Mr. Henry H. Edmonds and Mrs. Beatrice Hargrove Edmonds. She was a member of Fellowship Temple Church and was employed by the City of Bridgeport.

Survivors of Ms. Edmonds include one daughter, Ms. Deirdre Tyner of Bridgeport; two sons, Mr. George Tyner Jr. of Waterbury, CT and Mr. Jonathan Tyner of Bridgeport; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ms. Annie Edmonds of Stratford, CT, Ms. Hazel Edmonds of Meriden, CT, Mrs. Carolyn Jackson of Syracuse, NY and Mrs. Hallie Sparks of South Boston; seven brothers, Mr. Elijah Edmonds of Stratford, Mr. Gregory Edmonds and Mr. Lawrence Edmonds, both of Bridgeport, Mr. Nathan Edmonds of Chatham, Mr. Preston Edmonds, Mr. Joseph Edmonds and Mr. Willie Womack, all of South Boston; and a  host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Edmonds was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 30, at 1 p.m. at Christ Temple Blue Rock Pentecostal Church in Vernon Hill with Bishop James Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Mrs. Hallie Sparks, 4035 Bold Springs Road, South Boston.

Kathryne Hughes Foster

Mrs. Kathryne Hughes Foster of South Boston died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at her home. She was born in Halifax County on July 10, 1931 and was 78 years old. She was the daughter of the late Woodson Hughes and the late Ruth Nichols Hughes, and was married to the late George Robert Kerr Foster Sr.

Mrs. Foster was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, George Robert Kerr Foster of South Boston; three sisters, Virginia H. Palmer, Lucille H. Brandon and Eva H. Hagood, all of South Boston; nieces and nephews, Judy B. Owen, who lovingly cared for her aunt, Roberta R. New, Rebecca C. Satterfield, R. Dean Coates, John E. Brandon, Woodson Hughes, Jane B. Revak and Sara H. Ware. Two sisters, Francis H. Ramsey and Rebecca Hughes; and one brother, William Beverly Hughes, also preceded Mrs. Foster in death.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Revs. John Eure and Jeaux Simmons conducting the service.

The family received friends Monday, Dec. 28, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home.

Rachel Hargis Stephens

Rachel Hargis Stephens, age 83, of 2604 Border Road, Chesapeake died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 27, 2009,  at Chesapeake Health & Rehab Center.

Mrs. Stephens was a native of Person County, NC, daughter of the late Judd Lester and Carrie Gentry Hargis and wife of 63 years to William Earl Stephens who survives. She was a retired teacher and was of the Primitive Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband is three sons, Letcher Stephens and wife, Brenda, Jerry Stephens and wife, Stephanie and William Van Stephens, all of Chesapeake; five grandchildren: Wayne Stephens, Brian Stephens, Dean Stephens, Tim Stephens and Stacey S. Deputy.

Mrs. Stephens was preceded in death by five brothers, George, Lester, Baxter, Victor and Elbert Hargis and a sister, Mattie Hooper.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, in the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel by the Elder Jimmy Gray.  Interment will follow in the Surl Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family received friends Tuesday, Dec. 29, from 7 till 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be James Deputy, Ralph Harris, Brian Stephens, Dean Stephens Jr., Tim Stephens and Wayne Stephens Jr.

Bobby Clark, Matthew Hooper and Don Whitfield will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Willie Wise Stovall

Mr. Willie Wise Stovall of 313 Edmunds Street, South Boston died Dec. 21 at his residence at the age of 77.

Mr. Stovall was born in Halifax County on Jan. 13, 1932 to the late Mrs. Lucille Satterfield Brooks and was married to Pinky Womack Stovall. He was a member of New Mount Olive Apostolic Church.

In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include six daughters, Ms. Louie Venable of Crystal Hill, Mrs. Carol Simpson of Pelham, NC, Mrs. Patricia White, Ms. Angela Palmer, Mrs. Sharon Womack and Mrs. Cynthia Chambers, all of South Boston; three sons, Mr. Willie Stovall of Nathalie, Mr. Donald Stovall of Vernon Hill and Mr. Kelvin Stovall of South Boston; 25 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ms. Sarah Tucker, Mrs. Annie Curtis, both of Halifax, and Rev. Ann Tucker of Wilmington, DE; four sons-in-law, Mr. William White, Mr. Mande Womack, Mr. Calvin Chambers and Mr. Athen Simpson; three daughters-in-law, Mrs. Pamela Stovall, Mrs. Sophia Stovall and Mrs. Debra Stovall; five brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Stovall was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Violet Battle, Ms. Mary Stovall and Mrs. Virginia Owens; five brothers, Payton, Thomas, Montgomery, James and Billy Stovall’ and two grandchildren, Ms. Kimberly Stovall and Master Amarian Mays.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. at New Mt. Olive Apostolic Church with District Elder Leonia Palmer officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

The family received friends at the residence.

Robert Harvey Underwood

Robert Harvey Underwood, 82, of 1170 Slick Road, Nathalie died Dec. 24, 2009 at his home. He was born Jan. 18, 1927 in Spartanburg, SC, the son of the late Robert Thomas Underwood and the late Ora Jeanett Lawrence Underwood. He formerly attended Antioch Baptist Church in Sandston and was a member of American Legion Post 0342.

Mr. Underwood was a self-employed general contractor and was a World War II Veteran.

Survivors include six sons, David H. Underwood of Gloucester, Robert W. Underwood of Morehead City, NC, Randy W. Underwood of Varina, Tony L. Underwood of Sandston, Clifford C. Underwood of Varina, and Irvin H. Underwood of Quinton; two daughters, Marsha J. Underwood of VA and Deborah J. Fuller of Mechanicsville; two sisters, Polly Noll and Louise Edwards, both of Sandston; his fiancé, Louise Bowes of South Boston; 25 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

One daughter, Julie L. Underwood, also preceded Mr. Underwood in death.

Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 30, at 10 a.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Washington Memorial Park.

The family received friends Dec. 29 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home.

Charles Wayne Wimbish

Mr. Charles Wayne Wimbish of Virginia Beach, formerly of the Elkhorn community in Halifax County, passed peacefully on Friday, Dec. 25, 2009, at his home.

Mr. Wimbish was born in Halifax County to the late Tom and Mable Lovelace Wimbish on Aug. 13, 1956, and was 51 years of age.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene Wimbish; two sons, Delroy and Peter; two daughters, Taylor and Kennedy; three grandchildren; his 11 siblings, Thomas, Walter, Horace, Donald, Brenda, Rev. Robert, William, Gerard, Philip, Jesse and Wanda; and a host of other relatives and many, many friends.

One brother, Gene Obie, preceded him in death.

Funeral services for Mr. Wimbish will be Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at 12:30 p.m. at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, 1057 Kennedy Street, Norfolk.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until service time at the church and at Dunn and Sons Funeral Home from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Burial will take place Sunday, Jan. 3, at 2 p.m. with Military Honors in the Wimbish Family Cemetery, Dabney House Road, Java.

Ruby Bernice Spencer Woods

Mrs. Ruby Bernice Spencer Woods of South Boston died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at The Woodview Nursing Home. She was born in Patrick County and was 93 years old.

Mrs. Woods was the daughter of the late William Spencer and the late Fannie Rorrer Spencer and married to the late John Thomas Woods. She was a member of First Baptist Church in South Boston

Survivors include one daughter, Carol Jeannette Spurlock and husband, Doug, of South Boston; one granddaughter, Tamra Lynne Spurlock of Suffolk; one great-granddaughter, Madison Spurlock Crouse of Virginia Beach; one sister, Lois Wood and husband, James, of Martinsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

One grandson, Douglas Kent Spurlock Jr., also preceded Mrs. Woods in death.

An informal service of remembrance was held Monday, Dec. 28, at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home. Graveside services followed at 3 p.m. at Fairystone Baptist Church Cemetery in Stuart.

Bernice Taylor Saunders

Bernice Taylor Saunders, age 65, of 1018 Pumping Hill Road, Nathalie died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston. She was born on September 1, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, the daughter of the late Gus M. Taylor and the late Christine Meadows Taylor.

She was a member of Sheva Church of Christ. 

She is survived by her husband, Clyde B. Saunders of the residence; three sons, Kent Saunders and his wife, Kim, of Nathalie, Marty Saunders and his wife,  Penny, of Halifax, and Jason Saunders of Gretna; two sisters, Joyce Hershman of Monterey, and Pauline Sink of Rocky Mount; three brothers, Gus Taylor Jr. of Chatham, Hunt Taylor of AL, and Kenneth Taylor of Danville; eight grandchildren, Travis, Brandon, Christian, Gabriel, Kasper, Noah, Christopher, and Krista.   In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one sister, Margaret Marie Bullington, and one brother, Carl Taylor.

Funeral services will be conducted at Sheva Church of Christ on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at 1 p.m. with Minister Terry W. Schultz officiating. Burial will be at Sheva Church of Christ Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Sheva Church of Christ on Saturday from noon until 1 p.m. and other times at the residence.

Robert Earl Childress Sr.

Robert Earl Childress Sr. departed this life to be with the Lord Dec. 15, 2009 at John Dingle Veterans Hospital, Detroit, MI. He was a native of Halifax and was educated in the public school system. He was a lifetime member of Mt. Pleasant CME Church where he served as superintendent of Sunday school, Sunday school teacher, choir member and usher. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Disabled Veterans of America.

He was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin. He always made an immediate and lastly impression with everyone he met.

Friends may call at the residence or the fune4ral home. The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Dunn and Sons Funeral Home, 540 North Main Street, Halifax, phone 434-476-6020.

Home going celebration will be held at Mt. Pleasant CME Church Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at 2 p.m. The interment will be in the church cemetery. A repast for the family will be held in the church fellowship hall.

Freddy Morgan Slingo

Freddy Morgan Slingo, age 62, son of the late Donald and Ethel Slingo of South Boston, died Dec. 16 in Richmond, after a long hard fought battle with cancer. He was a 1965 graduate of Halifax County High School. 

He is survived by his wife, Destiny Danyel-Slingo of Chester; children, Courtenay S. Griffin and Candace S. Teed of Midlothian, Hillary, Eric and Casey Slingo of Barrington, IL; brothers, Alfred Michael (Mickey) Slingo of North Chicago VA Medical Center, North Chicago, IL and Robert Slingo of East Northport, NY; sister, Joan Pacula of Winston Salem, NC; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Richmond.
